Bollywood Disco: Summer Sunday Dance Party & Movie

Rekha will screen one of her favorite Bollywood movie classics, Don, followed by a 6+ hour marathon deejay set all at Littlefield located at 622 Degraw Street, Brooklyn.

For the current generation of South Asian club-goers, Bollywood is synonymous with the 1970s golden age of masala films. Don is one of the most successful movies from this era, it is replete with the staple features of this genre mixed with action, comedy, romance, and drama. An icon - Amitabh Bachchan, a sultry and bad ass femme fatale - Zeenat Aman. The plot includes double roles, separation, mistaken identity, underworld mob bosses, and a dynamic soundtrack including songs that are have been sampled by the Black Eyed Peas (Don’t Phunk With With My Heart).

This is the Brooklyn debut of the Bollywood Disco club night, which started over 10 years ago, this is a rare opportunity to dance to Bollywood selections—not in a fitness class, but from DJ Rekha’s deep vinyl and digital crates.

Food by Daal House

In India's southern-most state of Kerala - a mystical land of elephants, endless beaches, and serene backwaters - a tradition was born. When the monsoons descend each year, families rich and poor alike gathered indoors to take shelter and convene over a simple but wholesome dinner of steaming rice and DAAL. Warm memories of these feisty and flavorful communal gatherings are among the possessions I carried with me when I washed up on New York's shores many years ago.

The flavors of my Kerala homeland are deep and aromatic - rich with coconut flavors, herb infusions, and roasted spices. It should be no surprise that the cuisines of India's disparate and far-flung states can be as different as Swedish food from Greek. Daal from the southern region of Kerala is like no other and surprisingly absent from the culinary landscape in New York. Out of nostalgia, I turned to my mother's recipes and began to recreate my own brand of comfort food for family and friends.

Flashing forward to the present, the Brooklyn Flea appears. Suddenly there was an opportunity to evangelize the delights of Kerala cuisine to a wider audience than a dinner party, and without the Sisyphean struggle of opening a full-time restaurant. But what could I serve? It needed to be satisfying and nutritious. It had to be sensitive to the health-conscious and dietary-restricted modern Brooklyn palate. Ease of bulk preparation and transport was a must. And - most of all - it had to be delicious. That's when I dialed it down to the essentials. That dial settled on DAAL.

Welcome to Daal House, a whole new taste of India.
