Turtle Loaf - a Benefit for The Painted Turtle
Loafdom for The Turtle is a small group of Meat Loaf fans, who work with Meat’s full support in raising funds for our charity of choice, The Painted Turtle. The Painted Turtle was founded by Paul Newman and is the only camp of its kind in California, serving children across the state with a variety of serious illnesses. Each year The Painted Turtle provides life-changing experiences for 2,500 campers, ages 7-16, as well as reaches an additional 2,300 children through The Painted Turtle Outpost. The Painted Turtles adaptive programming makes it possible for children with serious medical conditions to enjoy traditional summer camp activities such as fishing, boating, horseback riding, archery, high ropes, and much more. The Painted Turtle supports children’s medical needs and inspires them to reach beyond their illnesses. All campers and families attend free of charge. The Painted Turtle is an independent not-for-profit organization dependent on the generosity of private donors.
At the end of May, The Painted Turtle was caught in the path of the Powerhouse wildfire in the Angeles National Forest. In what seems an inexplicable miracle, every one of the camp’s major buildings remained intact while every piece of vegetation at the camp and in the surrounding 30,000 acres was destroyed. Due to the extreme smoke damage to the buildings and the fire’s impact on the terrain, The Painted Turtle had no choice but to make the incredibly difficult decision to cancel all 2013 sessions. During the upcoming months The Painted Turtle will be undergoing an extensive process of landscape cleanup, cleaning of all buildings and ventilation systems, and an ozone cleaning process.
