Penn Lightbulb Cafe presents Listening to World Music

Carol Muller is an ethnomusicology professor and South African native who has published widely on South African music. She will discuss her free online class Listening to World Music, offered by Penn via Coursera, which has captured the imaginations of more than 37,000 learners. Selections in the syllabus run the gamut from Paul Simon’s "Graceland" to pieces performed by Tuvan Throat Singers from Russia, Pygmy Pop music, work by the Australian Aboriginal group Yothu Yindi, and the music of Cuba as popularized in the 1999 documentary "Buena Vista Social Club." Muller will focus on what can be learned by opening the classroom to the world, learning as 24/7 access and engagement, what translates and what doesn't, and changes in the works for the next iteration of the class.
Café events are free and open to the public, but RSVPs are encouraged. For more information or directions, contact Gina Bryan at 215-898-8721 or email at bryangm@upenn.edu.
