Keep Shelly in Athens
The swirling ambient sound of Keep Shelly in Athens (KSiA) captures that serene feeling you get on a gloomy, rainy day as your car glides over the slick city streets. With airy beats that are repetitive, but never trance-like, KSiA is an accessible and lighthearted entry into the world of down-tempo electronica. As enigmatic as they are talented, Keep Shelly in Athens is a Greek based duo signed to Forest Family Records. Fearing the trend of bands coasting more on their own hype than their actual talent, KSiA keep their cards close to their chest, focusing on their music, not their image. If their sold-out 2010 EP is any indication, it's a more than fair trade-off.
Chad Valley are the personal outpourings of one Hugo Manuel, the balearic inclined vocalist of Oxford’s Jonquil and founder member of the Blessing Force collective.
Taking a more electronic approach to sunset vibes, Hugo has made quite a splash this past summer. In his short 25 show career he’s already played in Dublin, Paris, Budapest, Belgrade and Istanbul, been a big smash at In The City and supported the likes of Amiina, Mountain Goats and Foals. His music has been on every blog you can think of from Gorilla vs. Bear to Pitchfork’s Forkcast, the latter of which has featured him three times in recent months and at one point in late October was the fourth most blogged about artist on the planet.
He’s enjoyed a host of radio plays across the BBC and had his debut BBC session recorded for Huw Stephens’ show in January 2011.
Chad Valley’s debut EP is out on Service’s US imprint Cascine (USA / UK / JP / Scan) and French label Maman (EU) and a follow up is slated for release this coming Spring in UK, US and Japan.
Summer of 2012 Boardwalk duo Mike Edge and Amber Quintero were introduced by mutual friends in Los Angeles. Although both were involved in different musical projects (Mike contributing his musical and production know-how, Amber contributing her vocal ability), an undeniable creative chemistry made itself present between the two within a short time of introduction. This chemistry sparked a curiosity that could only be satiated by a collaboration of minds. The creative compatibility test came one day on an impromptu road trip. The elements involved were basic yet obligatory: a guy, a girl, a car, the open road. The end result was 'I'm Not Myself,' their first song written together. The title itself is indicative of Mike and Amber's altered state of being after that ride. The road trip was over, but the journey was only beginning. Focused on creating a sound that was their own, Mike sourced and built the gear that was requisite in capturing the essence of their sound. Their exploration of tracking analog sounds and vocal melodies over dreamy instrumental layers continued until an album of songs was complete. The needle makes contact with the record, and so continues Boardwalk's journey, their self-titled album released by the legendary independent music label Stones Throw Records.
