SAXOPHONIST RON BLAKE QUARTET

SAXOPHONIST RON BLAKE QUARTET

His best work, by far, emerged in an age-old ballad, "Body and Soul," a tune so deeply ingrained in the jazz repertoire that today's instrumentalists face a formidable challenge in playing it: saying something new.

Though Blake didn't radically reconceive the piece, he certainly refreshed it – even while tipping his hat to storied recordings by Coleman Hawkins and others. You could hear his references to past tenor icons in the gauzy quality of his tone, the cushioned weight of his low notes and the high romanticism of his phrase-making.
