Minted together by psychedelic, folk, rock, and doo-wop influences, Varlet is an indie genre-bending sonic dream layered over earthy, driving drums. On Varlet's November 2011 release, "The Drifter," Lilly Scott's vocals rise like bubbles bursting into a rocking jazz wail, as if Billie Holiday decided to resurrect and front a Neil Young-inspired indie act. The drums pulse with earthy distinction and song structures on guitar, lap steel, and piano range from classical composition, to jazz, to intricately woven '60s and '70s psychedelic progressions.

Yet Varlet's lyrical content may be the grittiest element the band offers on The Drifter. All members collaborate on each track's instrumentation and lyrics. Their partnership creates tangible narrative settings in every song on the new album: Perhaps Varlet is exploring the female experience of constructed identity ("High Heels", "Lady Lie"), or delivering straightforward commentary on the subculture of a city big enough to raise social adrenaline, yet small enough to wrap around yourself ("Eastern", "In My Pocket"). Fast riffs over folk elements pound your heart steadily into your throat as you listen to the only current female-fronted act delivering haunted, candid lyrics about modern urban life, without packaging that content into a gimmick.

The Drifter realizes Varlet's artistic vision to effect a striking amalgam of experimental folk with pulsing rock and roll undertones.

"VAR-LET" -- A Shakespearian word meaning a rogue: a deceitful and unreliable scoundrel.

Attic Attack

Singer-songwriter Donny D Rose has been performing in Denver since 2006. While opening for bands, playing at coffee shops, and powering through his share of open mic nights, he looked for opportunities to extend his vision to a band. It wasn't until Rose started production on his first EP that he would find a musical match in Coupe Michael. They formed My Shadows Existence and released a self-titled EP in 2009. Over the next 2 years, Rose and Coupe tried out several other band members, but by June 2011 the Americana duo was still just a duo. While continuing to look for the right mix of musicians, the two performed as members of the Alan Andrews, Jr. (The Photo Atlas) acoustic side project Serious Moonlight.

With the addition of a steady rhythm section and a cellist in 2011, Attic Attack was born. The group's sound includes an electric mandolin, lap steel slide guitar, and Rose's impassioned vocals delivering thoughtful lyrics. As the group moves forward, they hope to incorporate more unique, forgotten instruments into their sound - which is the first of the double meaning behind the name Attic Attack. The second meaning is a reference to the mind being under constant attack by the outside world. Expanding on the songwriting of Rose, Attic Attack strives to create Indie-Americana music that will encourage thought, self-awareness and further a love for music.

Champagne Charlie

"...Champagne Charlie has taken root in the naugahyde covered barstools of Denver's seediest bars. They are a band that grew both musically and lyrically despite, or maybe due to, dimly lit rooms, and the smell of stale beer combined with sour bar towels. Manifestation artistique, originally a four member band, their numbers have grown to seven or more depending on the night. Like Chicago Cabaret, Champagne Charlie fully embraces a larger band ensemble, believing "the more the better." Playing a dozen different instruments, the band combines elements of Jazz, Blues, Waltz, and Americana to create their own style of Dark Denver Cabaret music. With several members being multi-instrumentalists, rhythm and melodies intermingle as one instrument is set down and another is picked up. While the band plays a drinking man's music, Ryan "Peepers" King sings with the gravelly delight of a parched throat encased in a sailor's bones about love, loss, damnation, and a lack of forgiveness."-ListenUpDenver
