Mike Hamel is a singer/songwriter with a lot to say. After struggling in the local music scene of his hometown (Poughkeepsie, Ny), he has immersed himself completely in his music.
"I just want to be happy and sustain myself off of playing and making honest music," he says.
The first step was quitting his job. Check. The second step was getting an e.p. recorded. Check. Hamel recorded "Where the Change Is" (a 6-song disc available on Itunes, Spotify, Rhapsody, and others) with the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign. The third step is in motion now. Hamel currently plays regularly at The Back Fence in NYC's esteemed Greenwich Village and is quickly amassing shows in and around the area.
Hamel's music can be described as alternative rock, though his influences range from Jeff Buckley to The Roots. Audiences have likened his sound to Colin Hay (Men at Work), Incubus, and Glen Hansard (Swell Season). His solo performances (which are his main mode of transport for now) are emotional, raw, and full of energy. With only his guitar and larger-than-life voice, Hamel commands attention and can transform a loud bar into a listening room. Everyone who witnesses his live show walks away smiling and singing.
Votive Crown is a Brooklyn duo featuring 70's studio sensibilities, experimental looping, country soul textures, and riff-based improvisations. Female vocals, run through harmonizers, and slap echos synchronize to baritone guitar fuzz and pedal steel volume swells. Their set balances re-arranged classics & through composed originals with elements of modal jazz, psych, philly soul, and indie singer/songwriter. Votive Crown will be performing originals and covers from their first EP which is slated for release this fall.
