The Shine Brothers (ex Black Angels)

The Shine Brothers (ex Black Angels)

If The Everly Brothers were invited to The Birthday Party, The Shine Brothers, a liberal dose of melodic mayhem, would be the party favor. Waving the 'psych-my-delic' banner, The Shine Brothers achieve an alchemic balance of sunshine pop song structures and howling devilish rhythms, crowned by dirty woven vocal harmonies. The Shine Brothers' ensemble include Nate Ryan (formerly of The Black Angels), Colin Ryan, Oakley Munson, and Ryan Rapsys.

Melissa Swingle (solo set)

Melissa Swingle earned her outsider status early. She comes originally from Mississippi by way of the Ivory Coast, where, as she puts it, “I gained the knowledge that I would never really fit in wherever I go.” This is good news for us, as Melissa’s search for meaning has led her to write and sing marvelous songs of American life, tour the country, and record and perform with three bands. The first of these, Trailer Bride, made five records. Three more albums were issued by Swingle’s subsequent band, The Moaners. Through it all Melissa has toured the country, performing with Neko Case, The Mountain Goats, The Drive-By Truckers and Jesco White, The Dancing Outlaw. Such is her commitment to Southern expression that Swingle drove fourteen hours straight from a gig at Tipitina’s in New Orleans to be the last act to ever play Sleazefest in Chapel Hill. Meantime, her songs have appeared in movies and radio.

Impossible Vacation

It’s hard to say when Impossible Vacation started. Could have been twenty four years ago at a bus stop when SB (Heart Beats Red, Hope and Anchor, Desperate Pilot) met Todd Weakley (Hope and Anchor, Desperate Pilot, Boys of Summer) on their way to middle school. Possibly it was over drinks with Lance Wille (Reigning Sound, Unholy Trio) celebrating the end of a life-draining job for SB. The truth is, vacations begin and end, but we never remember those parts. We only remember the sparkling moments in between. Impossible Vacation makes music about those moments. Stitched together with heartfelt sincerity and raw reckless fun, Impossible Vacation crafts vulnerable narratives. Sharing songwriting and vocal duties, SB and Weakley have been making music together for over a decade, and for these longtime admirers of Wille’s dynamic and emotionally complex drumming, this project is something of a dream vacation. There is something nostalgic about it; something southern; something like a road trip that changed your life but took you years to realize it. Impossible Vacation disembarks from Asheville, NC.
