Harold Dejan, who was the leader of the Olympia Brass Band, said come and bring your horn we’re going to parade on Sunday. It’s all day. Jolly Bunch parade. It was eight hours. In August. Very hot. I jumped at the chance. I played with the band all the way. And then Kid Sheik said: you’re the first white guy to play the whole parade. And the reason was I’d just arrived at the right time. The Civil Rights Act had just been passed in July 1964, if I remember correctly. This was August. So segregation was finished, at least officially.
Leader bios were pulled from interviews conducted and published by Eve Abrams in the book 'Preservation Hall.'
