This event is all ages
The best music is made by those who expose our very guilty pleasures with undeniable, stimulating creations. This can be said of the mere samples we have received from rising producer Cyril Hahn.
Cyril experimented early on during high school with music production and abandoned it after leaving his hometown of Bern, Switzerland to pursue his studies in Vancouver, Canada. After a 3 year hiatus from music, feeling a need to return to his former love, he sat down and did what is considered by some to be taboo: stripped down two iconic R&B songs and gave them his unique atmospheric twist: Mariah Carey's 'Touch My Body' and Destiny's Child 'Say My Name'.
Cyril's remixes instantly hit a nerve with internet fans and other artists after uploading to his Soundcloud, especially the Destiny's Child anthem. This summer, 'Say My Name' hit #1 on Hype Machine, was selected as the final track by Diplo for his BBC Radio 1 mix show, and posted as a favourite on the fan page of global trendsetting group, The xx. This fall Annie Mac also fell in love with the song, playing it on her radio show, at many of her shows and mentioning it as one of her addictive tracks of the year. 'Say My Name' now has over 600,000 plays on Soundcloud, countless tribute videos with over 2 million YouTube views, and is considered by many to be a favourite of 2012.
Toward the end of the year, Cyril released 3 other remixes that have also become crowd favourites: a hauntingly melodious remix of UK Electropop duo Alpines single 'Chances', followed by the atmospheric remix of Solange's 'Losing You', and the up-tempo, high-energy remix for U.S sister trio HAIM's 'Don't Save Me' (No.2 Hype Machine). Look out for two more official remixes out early 2013.
Let Cyril continue to feed your guilty pleasures with memorable shows & music for years to come
Ryan Hemsworth is a young producer from Canada with a remarkably productive output in the past two years and a totally unique approach to hip hop and R&B production.
With an early background as a singer and guitarist, he quickly weaned off rock into hip hop and more software oriented music, diving whole-heartedly into drum loops and samples. In 2011, his first release No Plans was featured on SPIN magazine’s Top 20 R&B albums of 2011 and he quickly followed up with A Way and Kitsch Genius, which got him increasingly noticed for a singular sound attracting a number of music critics and artists from across the country. He soon began cultivating relationships online and became a go-to producer for MCs like Main Attrakionz, Shady Blaze, and Deniro Farrar, helping craft a sound sitting somewhere between chill wave and trap rap. Hyperbolic Chamber Music, a collaborative project with NYC clothing brand Mishka, saw him at the helm of a 22-minute posse cut featuring 26 different rapper from across America, and his remix treatment of Grimes, Frank Ocean, and Danny Brown have kept his name spreading in the past year.
With his first label release, the Last Words EP released through Wedidit Collective, Ryan Hemsworth continues his sonic collages and explorations, digging even deeper into unexplored genres and delivering his finest work to date.
Kid Smpl is the current alias of 22-year-old Seattle producer and 2013 RBMA alumn Joey Butler. A veteran of stage and studio, Butler has been busy developing a style of atmospheric bass music that continues to deepen with each release. His signature sound incorporates lush synths, meditative low-end, muffled vocals samples, and warm textural field recordings, punctuated by drums that straddle every end of the tempo spectrum. The sounds are spread across a canvas made wide with breathing room.
Briefly put, it evokes the introspection of a far-flung space colony colony's forest terrarium, late into the evening, alone or with close company.
In November 2012, after a string of successful releases showcasing this style, Butler releases his first full-length on Hush Hush music label. The 'Skylight' album provides a fully realized picture of Butler as a producer, articulating the hazy future vision he has been praised for on numerous EPs, tracks, and remixes released to date. With an original track on the new Friends Of Friends; 'Show Me The Future' compilation (alongside productions from Ryan Hemsworth, Octa Octa, Dreams, Evenings...) and a 'Skylight' remix collection album planned for February, 2013 seems to be very promising already.
Seattle native DJAO, aka Alex Osuch, has been a DJ for over a decade, but recent years have seen him shift focus towards his work as a producer. After joining up with Dropping Gems, Alex began to produce in earnest, and his live performances have since evolved on a nearly show-by-show basis. His music covers a wide swath of the electronic spectrum, with no ultimate plan to settle on any single style. Instead it exemplifies the progressive tradition of mixing elements from different disciplines into a cohesive whole, in service to a central harmonic vision.
Among his influences are hip hop, metal, noise, fusion jazz, soul, and the ever-evolving spectrum of future music. Armed with this array of named and unnamable musical idioms, Alex seeks out a hazy vision of natural environments as they might have existed in ancient times, could exist on other planets, and as they may yet exist here, on Earth, deep into the future.
