Triple threat Zak Waters always leaves a mark. Ever since he first formally began performing in high school, the Los Angeles singer, songwriter and producer never failed to make a lasting impression on his audience, and it’s always three-pronged. Unlike his contemporaries, he can do it all from constructing a track to writing the lyrics to performing it live with his band or in a DJ set. His impact is about to expand immensely with the release of his full-length debut album, Lip Service—available exclusively now via a unique deal with Spotify.
Zak’s always been driving his own music. In 2011, he broke on to the scene with his independent debut EP, New Normal. He served as both the featured writer and singer on Madeon's hit dance single "The City," which hit #1 on Hype Machine and peaked at #4 on the Billboard Dance Chart, where it stayed for nine months. Meanwhile, his single with Candyland, "Not Coming Down," topped the Beatport charts as #1 track for two weeks. He's performed on AXS Live, Last Call With Carson Daly, and on KIIS FM. Meanwhile, he’s not only been personally sought out by Flo Rida and Benny Benassi for their upcoming 2014 tracks, but also by the likes of legendary songwriter Diane Warren and Atlantic Records artist Francisco for his production talents. He's produced official remixes alongside Benny Benassi, R3hab, Pharrel Williams for All-American Rejects, Adam Lambert, and Foxy Shazam Moreover, famed Los Angeles venue The Satellite in Silver Lake tapped him for a high-profile residency as well in September 2013.
On Lip Service, shimmying between soulful funk savoir faire and fresh dance floor-ready pop, he cultivates an immediately seductive, soaring, and shimmering style of his own. Zak puts it best though, "My music is definitely meant to make people dance. I like to think of it as disco at its core. There are elements of EDM and R&B at the same time. You could call it neo-funk-pop. I'll take that as mine."
His personal panache punctuates the first single "Penelope." The song tells a cheeky little tale that's as vivid as it is vivacious. "I kept listening to the track and going back to a vision of a young kid obsessed with his baby sitter and wondering where she's at now," he explains. "I think we all had that babysitter. My friend's sitter was so hot. She was 'Penelope' for me. Now, you wonder, 'Would she look at me differently now that I'm grown up?'"
Elsewhere, “Dear John” featuring Audra Mae is a smart rumination on breaking up, while “Over You” examines the some darker moments post-relationship. Waters tapes into real tangible emotion, extending beyond the feel good pop.”
There's one pervasive thread throughout. "It's all about wanting to have fun," Zak concludes. "The majority of my songs are upbeat. They're meant to be the soundtrack to somebody's wild night. I love when somebody tells me I made it onto their workout or sex mix. If I can encapsulate a time for the listener, I feel like I will never be forgotten.”
Parade Of Lights
Parade of Lights are an alt-electro band based in Los Angeles. Comprised of Ryan Daly, Anthony Improgo, Mariana Iglesias, and John Brummitt, the group combines equal parts rock, new wave, and shoegaze to create a unique blend of 80's influenced pop drawing on inspiration from artists like U2, Depeche Mode, M83, and even Madonna.
Shortly after meeting in LA in 2006, they formed the band Polus. After releasing a four-song EP entitled "Wish" and garnering a significant buzz locally, Polus was put on hiatus due to considerable demand for both Daly and Improgo as touring musicians. Even with their rigorous touring schedules, the two managed to keep their friendship intact and exchanged song ideas via email until 2010 when they decided to officially reunite as Parade of Lights. They spent that year and 2011 releasing new music and playing shows in Southern California, Utah and Nevada, opening for artists like Imagine Dragons, Marcy Playground, Light FM, Rooney, Stamps, and Ringside among others.
Recent music film and TV placements have gained the band considerable attention from music and TV insiders, not to mention a legitimate core group of dedicated fans. The exposure along with POL's hook-laden songs and entertaining live show, led to a publishing deal December 2011 with Imagem Music.
The band's latest effort, an EP entitled "Born To Live, Born To Love", was released in September of 2012.
The story of Atomic Tom begins in Brooklyn. Atomic Tom started to hear their lyrics shouted back at them at shows. "We knew the time was right for a full-length record."
Boasting an exhilarating electronica-meets-arena-rock shuffle that is hauntingly delicate, Atomic Tom demonstrates remarkable musical ability and diversity, married with an innate sense of how to connect with an audience on a grand scale. "It's possible to reach each and every individual in an eighty thousand seat stadium," claims Philip. "You can make an enormous, towering sound and still say something deeply meaningful and musical." They plan to do just that.
The band's first single, "Take Me Out", neatly summarizes the theme of the record: "It's a vulnerable song. It's about letting people into your life, letting people rescue you," explains Luke. "Admitting that you need that, and then asking for it...that's a very difficult task, though it's something everyone goes through at some point."
The Story of Baywood
In late 2010, fate came a-knocking for Joe Ginsberg and Jarrad Kritzstein - two young Eastside gentlemen filled to the brim with creativity, talent, and facial hair. The pair were instant friends and considered the possibility of a "separated at birth" hospital error as all took note that they could be in the same police line-up with their dark Jewish locks, black rimmed glasses, and extensive wardrobe of flannel shirts. Perhaps their connection was brought on by a shared ability to pluck away at virtually any instrument under the sun. Maybe it was their shared love of Australian accents. Regardless of the cause, both fellows felt gratitude in finding a brand new partner in crime.
Some people say when you meet your true doppleganger, the universe explodes. Luckily, this didn't happen. Instead Jarrad and Joe began a darling bromance and bonded over music, whiskey, girls, and heartbreak. While playing in Audra Mae's band, The Almighty Sound, and becoming a big, happy Silverlake family, Jarrad and Joe quickly ascended to a new level of communication thanks to some kind of shared-brain connection. It was a coded language consisting primarily of abbreviations, catchphrases, and hashtags. Verbal chatter led to music chatter so under Audra's encouragement, Joe shared some old garage band recordings with Jarrad that he had left unattended over the last year. After a quick listen in a room conveniently filled with acoustic instruments, they finished their first song "I Can Breathe Again" in just a few hours.
With inspiration so thick from wounded hearts and the buzz of meeting their creative matches, the two proceeded to write and record 5 songs in 5 hangs. They passed their music to friends and family only to receive rave reviews and inquiries as to what the band was called and when they'd be sharing their creations with the public. After some brief telepathic Jarrad-to-Joe communication they agreed it was time to become a band. As they stood on Jarrad's front stoop contemplating what to call themselves, they reflected on all the great times they'd had on Baywood street, home of Jarrad's studio and all their recording sessions. The name Baywood... yeahBAYWOOD... stuck for all the positivity and creative energy it brought the pair, and a brand new earthy, acoustic, folk pop band was born.
