SoMo: The Ride Tour

Genre: R&B
Similar to: Big Sean, J Cole, Drake

As an independent R&B artist from the small town of Denison, TX, SoMo’s numerous YouTube videos, including medleys, renditions, covers, and original music, have accumulated over 30 million views and counting. In early 2013, SoMo released the highly anticipated music video for his original smash song Ride, from his 2012 debut mixtape entitled My Life. It has been viewed over 1.2 million times and seems to only reinforce SoMo’s artistic philosophy; “If it sounds good, people will listen.” SoMo recently concluded The Show Off Tour, his first ever national headlining tour, and is currently recording his debut album in Dallas and Los Angeles. This album will be released this fall ahead of a 30-city national headlining tour.

Genre: Rap
Chicago rapper Alex Wiley is a unique figure who most closely resembles “Cartman” from ‘South Park’ and makes music that does not fit into the drill lane of GBE or the more lyrical lane of Chance The Rapper and his Save Money collective. The 19-year old artist blends singing and rapping together over soundscapes that are as influenced by rock as they are hip-hop. In June, he dropped a mixtape called ‘Club Wiley,’ a project that gained a lot of attention for the features Alex was able to secure. These include Freddie Gibbs, Action Bronson, and hometown buzzmakers Vic Mensa and Chance the Rapper. Wiley’s ability to craft hooks is reflected throughout the entire ‘Club Wiley’ experience. Songs like ‘Earfucked’ and ‘Creepin’ shine as a result. It makes both of these songs in particular, and the rest of the tape in general, enjoyable even for fans of other genres of music.

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Chicago’s Kid Slim has a pretty impressive history in music. In 2011, he claimed the #1 spot on datpiff with his Slimstones mixtape. Then, in 2012, he again claimed the #1 spot with his Stay Young mixtape.  It seems he can’t be stopped. Today, he released his latest project titled Freshman 15, and he’s aiming for that top spot yet again. But hey, it’s not all about the numbers, but they do speak for something. The real magic comes when you hit the play button and you go from one track to the next. In addition to being catchy (its hella-catchy), it’s all real stuff. This stuff really happened to the kid. The tape is focused on his experience of the college life, prior to him dropping out and perusing music. Each track is a polished piece of work with excellent beat selection and even better rhymes. This is one of those rare projects that you can listen from start to finish and enjoy every track.
