Missy Raines & The New Hip

Music is immediate. A few seconds in and you know whether you like a band or not. Missy Raines & The New Hip hits the downbeat. The riff and rhythm of electric guitar and the kick of acoustic bass and drums carry you across the first few changes. Then Missy's clear, intimate voice tells the story. You lean in and listen.

They don't manipulate you—they move you. This is a band that trusts the simple, basic things that create a conversation between the listener and the band: rhythm, tone, space, and great new songs. You bring your desire for something real. They bring the music.

But real and simple are not real simple. These players have honed their art. Although they are a new (and yes, hip) band, what comes through is their love and mastery of jazz, fusion, blues, Americana, and bluegrass.

They know what these styles have in common: the magic of music made fresh with each performance. The band explores old sounds and creates something new—a dialog of acoustic and electric, of drive and groove, of what is and what if.

When they play, you feel it—immediately.

"…an ensemble perfectly balanced between brilliantly composed precision and equally brilliant spontaneity." Jon Weisberger, The Nashville Scene

"…The New Hip features some deft singer-songwriter vocal change-ups, as well as
musically witty instrumentals that cross over into what could just as
well be labeled progressive jazz."
-Wall Street Journal

"Raines continues to reach far beyond the confines of bluegrass with her inventiveness…Her roots remain distinctively bluegrass, while her originals and arrangements reflect her eclectic taste." -Strings Magazine

"With a string of high profile gigs and seven bluegrass Bassist of the Year awards behind her—Raines offers her solo debut, Inside Out. The CD showcases the range of Missy's talent, as she leads her quintet of young acoustic aces through bluegrass, newgrass, pop, and jazz terrains with solid yet inventive support, fluid solos, and engaging vocals."
-Bass Player Magazine

"MerleFest Bands To Watch" "Missy Raines and the New Hip are another much-buzzed-about band on the scene these days. Pulling from contemporary country, jazz, bluegrass, and their own imaginations, their music is smooth and sweet."
-About.com

"She's been named the International Bluegrass Music Association's Bass Player of the Year a record seven times, but Missy Raines never lets displays of instrumental virtuosity get in the way of a good song or a swinging groove on her first album with nimble new backing group The New Hip. Inside Out rests comfortably at the sweet spot where bluegrass and jazz meet…"
Chris Neal -Country Weekly

"There is indeed great chemistry between the band members and it most definitely reflects to the music they create.
With her incredible bass playing aside, Missy's steamy vocals are also unique for the genre. She has the voice of a jazz singer mixed with country and pop influences."
- The Prog File

"If music was a corn field–then Missy Raines & The New Hip would be the big #%*# tractor plowing a big $#&* groove you could see from outer space." -an innocent bystander

"One minute they're a smokey jazz band, next minute they're rocking out, it's incredible." -a happy club owner

Some background on Missy:

Missy Raines is a 7-time recipient of the Bass Player of the Year Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association and a former member of the Grammy-nominated Claire Lynch Band and the acclaimed duo Jim Hurst & Missy Raines. She is one of the most respected, popular, and trailblazing figures in bluegrass. Her rich pedigree reaches from legends such as Mac Wiseman, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves, and Eddie & Martha Adcock, to current artists such as Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis, Dudley Connell, Don Rigsby, and the Brother Boys.

Dale Ann Bradley

This is Dale Ann Bradley. She's the 2007, 2008 & 2009 IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year and has been hailed by Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs as one of the greatest vocalists in country and bluegrass music. A former Coon Creek Girl and mainstay at Kentucky's Renfro Valley Barn Dance, Bradley commands a list of awards as long as Highway 40, yet a few minutes with her tells you she is something even more than extraordinarily gifted – she's extraordinarily human. A Primitive Baptist preacher's daughter out of the hills of Kentucky where no musical instruments were allowed, Bradley grew up in a self-described "backwoods holler" down a rural road where electricity and running water weren't available until she was in high school – something she has more in common with the first generation of bluegrass than her contemporaries in today's scene.
