2013 is full of promise for The Toy Hearts…
After ten years of gigging across the UK, Europe and the USA, in May 2013 the core trio of The Toy Hearts: Hannah, (Vocals/Mandolin) Sophia, (Guitar/Vocals) and their Father Stewart, (Banjo/Dobro/Steel) are relocating from their home in Birmingham UK to their musical Mecca, Austin, Texas for the whole summer …
The Toy Hearts have been making music together since the year 2000, and between 2006-2012 they have recorded and released 4 albums on their own label Wood Ville Music, their third Femme Fatale was recorded in Nashville and their fourth Whiskey, was edited, mixed and mastered there. They have already made several trips to the USA previously to both record and tour, but this is the first time they are able to stay for an extended period. They will be basing themselves out of Austin Texas and gigging in the surrounding areas, but their schedule includes gigs in South Dakota, New York, New Jersey, & Philadelphia. They will be rounding off the trip at the end of September with a visit to Raleigh North Carolina, as Official Showcase Artists for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s week of conferencing and shows.
It isn’t easy to completely categorize The Toy Heart’s sound; their music is a mixture of bluegrass and western swing with a dash of continental jazz. They aren’t just mimicking American roots music; they are genuinely innovating and developing the genre from a British perspective. Any preconceptions about what at first might seem to be an odd combination, two British girls and their father playing an essentially American form of music, are dispelled as soon as you see them perform. They have been proving the old adage about how you get to the Grand Old Opry? Practice! The years of honing their craft on the road has given them an enviable reputation as great singers, songwriters and instrumentalists, whom always deliver on a live show. Their tour schedule is regular and robust, including gigs across the UK and Europe, with an annual winter tour of Germany/Switzerland/Austria.
In the UK they have opened for diverse artists such as Robert Plant, Imelda May, Chris Thile, Ricky Skaggs, Tim O’Brien, The Hot Club of Cowtown, The Quebe Sisters, Kitty Daisy & Lewis, Gene Watson, & Peter Rowan. They can also count The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood and veteran BBC broadcaster Bob Harris in their fans.
The Toy Hearts aren’t from Texas, but they got there as soon as they could!
That’s right they’re not from Texas, but Texas wants them any way!
