KEN mode (an acronym for Kill Everyone Now) is a Canadian metallic hardcore-influenced noise rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba that was formed in September 1999.
Formed by brothers Jesse (guitar/vocals) and Shane Matthewson (drums) and long-time friend Darryl Laxdal (bass), the group released several demos from 1999 to 2003, leading to the release of their debut full length Mongrel on Escape Artist Records.
Several tours followed with the likes of Relapse Records' The End , Sulaco and American Heritage  in addition to regional dates with Mastodon, Burnt By The Sun, Anodyne, Pelican, Harkonen, Breather Resist, The Dream is Dead, Psyopus, Daughters, and Buried Inside across the Midwestern and East Coast United States, and throughout Canada. In 2004 Laxdal left the band, only to rejoin in 2005 to finish the band's follow-up record Reprisal, released in 2006 on CD by Escape Artist Records, and on double-LP by No List Records. After the recording of Reprisal Laxdal and the band parted ways again. Picking up bass duties after Laxdal's departure was Drew Johnston (guitarist in Electro Quarterstaff) who also played with Jesse, Shane and Darryl in Hide Your Daughters.
In October 2006 the band took part in the "Exclaim! Magazine Aggressive Tendencies Tour" with Pelican and Daughters across Canada. Bass duties were handled by former Kittens and Projektor member Jahmeel Russell who played with Jesse, Shane and Drew in Hide Your Daughters.
KEN mode went on to work with Jahmeel for the band's third full-length, Mennonite, which was released in July 2008 on CD by Jesse Matthewson's own label, Arctodus Records, and on 3x7" vinyl by No List Records.
Prior to releasing Mennonite, Chad Tremblay joined the band as their fourth bassist in two years. The band embarked on a European tour with Welsh rockers Taint. Chad would go on to direct the bands debut music video for the song "Extending Common Courtesy Throughout The Evening" from their Mennonite album.
In 2010 the band announced that Profound Lore Records will release its fourth full length album, titled Venerable, to be recorded August 2010 with Kurt Ballou of Converge. They also announced several North American tours with Gaza, Engineer, Rosetta, Buried Inside, Wolvhammer, Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire, and others.
Rosetta is a democratic collective, and writes and performs as a unit. It formed in June 2003. Its members are: Michael Armine, David Grossman, Bruce McMurtrie Jr., and James Matthew Weed.
"Metal for astronauts": not meaning a programmatic soundtrack to spaceflight itself, but more a sonic expression that might be found especially enjoyable by the particular type of person whose occupation or preoccupation has taken them -- physically or metaphysically -- out of the Earth's atmosphere. The Galilean Satellites is about one such space man.
Wake/Lift is about Moments, Men, and Places. Possibly from the perspective of this earlier protagonist.
We oppose the "music industry" and its exploitative treatment of unsuspecting artists. DIY is an ethic that works. We oppose "music criticism" and hype-filled magazines that set themselves up as arbiters of taste. We support grindcore. We support Paul Stanley. We oppose silly names for musical microgenres that begin with "post-". We oppose artwork composed of dead trees, flaming skulls, or dead naked women. We support symbolic exchange and the existence and pursuit of real Meaning.
Those familiar with New York City's Tiger Flowers know that they build upon the darkest metallic hardcore vibes of bands like Deadguy and Kiss It Goodbye, and that frontman Jesse Madre's intensity and sincerity are unmatched - and that all this is oddly-yet-perfectly balanced by the fact that Madre riffs like a stand-up comedian onstage and that the band cite early Motley Crue as a key inspiration. A staple of the New York scene, possessing a storied live show that has been described as both a tribal ceremony and a keg party gone wrong, Tiger Flowers have released one self-titled EP to date and are currently at work on their debut full-length album with producer Elliot Geller (Malignancy, Dim Mak) and mastering engineer Shane Frisby (Turmoil, Revocation). There is no label confirmed to release the album as of yet.
BrooklynVegan have described Tiger Flowers with these words: "The band take influence from elders who pushed the genre into new directions, like Deadguy, Converge, and Rorschach, and add in metal influences rooted in hardcore like Unsane... What emerges is a cocktail of furious hardcore interjected with chaotic blasts of screaming feedback, time changes, doomy riffs and most importantly, delivered with tons of live energy."
MetalSucks called Tiger Flowers' 2011 debut EP, "one of the most original and arresting releases of the year". The 'Flowers have yet to release any new material since that acclaimed EP, making it all the more exciting that the band are at work now on a new album. Stay tuned for more details.
East of the Wall
The Apologist is the apex of the East Of The Wall's lumbering history. This is a group that reinvents itself with each new album, a band whose members scurry off to a myriad of other projects, and return home with the scavenged spoils of new ideas. The distance between 2008's Farmer's Almanac and 2010's Ressentiment is a chasm wide enough. When adding in the perspective of past and present musical... excursions, such as The Postman Syndrome, El Drugstore, Argonauts, Day Without Dawn, and other related extracurricular endeavors, the breadth becomes harrowing, and vertigo ensues.
So now we come to The Apologist, the point in which these diverging paths meet and race towards the meridian. It merges the more melodic instrumental movements of the band's earlier material with the aggression of its latter works. Never has the band moved as far with such ease. Songs span multiple tracks and titles, and encompass a landscape of sonic topography.
The vocal elements, explored for the first time on Ressentiment, have been chiseled into a well-honed tool, and yet used more sparingly, often digging into the mix instead of towering above it. Yet when they rise, they do so with more authority. The most thundering moments of heaviness have taken on a new sheen as well, with an often terrifying beauty in contrast to Ressentiment's dissonant harshness. And in remembrance of Farmer's Almanac's sweeping vistas, there is a larger focus on purely instrumental sojourns.
The Apologist is the zenith of East Of The Wall's continued development, bridging its divergent routes and establishing the band's identity as one of the most adventurous yet powerful groups of the genre, whatever genre it is that you attempt to fit the band into.
