Since the Mid 80's with the explosion of the third wave of the SKA scene coming out of England, The BEAT BRIGADE was born and join the likes of the TOASTERS, Second Step, Boilers, Akings, Urban Blight and more and created a NYC SKA scene like no other!
The Beat Brigade blends a mix of SKA, Reggae, Calypso and old jamiacan roots vibe to their sound. Their heavy influences were the English Beat, Clash, Specials and can be heard on some of their songs.
After years of Hiatus, The Brigade members are back to hit the stage again! Catch them when you can! You Won't be dissappointed!
MK Groove Orchestra (Double Set) (Residency)
The MK Groove Orchestra is not your grandparents big band, the MKGO is equal parts rock band and jazz band, drawing upon all sounds and cultures that inspire them. Musical omnivores to say the least, depending on what night you see the group, you may be treated to a transcription of a B side from an obscure old school funk 45, the opening theme of a Bruce Lee film, a rendition of a classic recording by a cuban orchestra from the 50s or a classic rock anthem...most likely all of the above. The MKGO's originals also have an equal sense of adventure and breadth, written with clarity and purpose and performed integrity, intensity and virtuosity. Imagine all this...wrapped in face melting guitars.
The Huffers are a group of musicians who have played together in various combinations for many years. Buford and Dan played together with The Toasters, NYC's ska legends, and together with Ben most notably with Dub Is A Weapon, a mostly instrumental dub outfit that played up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and achieved some notoriety for being the back-up band for Lee Scratch Perry. Buford and Jenny are the horn section for the reggae-rock hybrid The Easy Star All-Stars, and together have circled the globe countless times. Kevin joins this lineup to deliver a full spectrum sound, loosely based on the post-punk funk sound of 1980's New York and London, sprinkled with some reggae magic dust, with straight ahead drums, funky bass and jangling guitars, over which the horns deliver harmonies, poly rhythms and, to quote Bruce Dickinson, "Explore the Space."
NOOK IS A BROOKLYN-BASED BAND THAT GOT IT'S NAME FROM PLAYING THEIR FIRST SHOW IN A TINY RECORD STORE. THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND WERE BROUGHT TOGETHER THROUGH THEIR MUTUAL INVOLVEMENT IN THE NEW YORK CITY IMPROVISED MUSIC WORLD. WHAT BEGAN AS A LARGELY IMPROVISATIONAL GROUP CONCEPT HAS GROWN INTO A UNIQUE COMPOSITIONAL APPROACH THAT CROSSES GENRE BARRIERS AND INCORPORATES THE WIDE-RANGING PLAYING EXPERIENCE AND MUSICAL INTERESTS OF THE BAND.
NOOK'S SOUND DRAWS FROM THE DIVERSE MUSICAL LANDSCAPE OF NEW YORK CITY, ESPECIALLY THE VIBRANT MUSIC SCENE IN BROOKLYN, AND FREELY MAKES USE OF EXPERIMENTAL ROCK, FREE IMPROVISATION, ATMOSPHERIC AND AMBIENT NOISE, FUNK, AND TIGHTLY STRUCTURED COMPOSITION.
