Improvisation in Classical Persian Music & Poetry

Improvisation in Classical Persian Music & Poetry

Persian classical music is based on improvisation and composition, and it is interwoven with Persian poetry. The repertoire of this music consists of several hundred short melodic movements called gusheh. Each gusheh has a unique characteristic, feeling, and history to it, which has been orally passed on to next generations. In the twentieth century these melodic movements were classified into a hierarchical structure of seven Dastgah and five Avaz. Through A Musical Journey through Iran, Amir Nojan (Setar), Sina Dehghani (Tonbak), and Taghi Amjadi (Vocal) aim to use the universal language of music to communicate and share the feelings of these melodies with the audience.
