South of France

“Sunny vocals floating atop guitar melodies paired with quick, concise drumming, South of France nails that timeless beach-party-grab-your-surfboard-and-Clubmasters vibe. Frontman Jeff Cormack anchors the sound with precise guitar & vocal melodies, while inserting guitar riffs that unobtrusively pluck at your heartstrings and invoke nostalgia. Combine that with Lueke’s breathy vocals and key parts, and ultimately SOF pushes out positive, bright vibes. South Of France has an infectious energy and a tight punchiness to their instrumentation that pairs well (like a nice cheddar and a fine Bordeaux)”. - Radio1190 Review of Live Performance

South Of France is an indie-pop band that was initially started by multi-intstrumentalist/producer/songwriter Jeff Cormack in 2011. Inspired by his love for retro guitar-pop, it began as a bedroom-recording project created during Jeff’s spare time away from writing/producing for film, television, and/or other recording artists. As the songs developed, Jeff realized that the addition of a female vocalist would bring a great new element to the sound. So… Jeff was lucky enough to meet singer and songwriter Kelly Lueke in Los Angeles. They quickly realized they had astonishingly similar taste in music and decided to join forces.

South of France's first release "Kings", a 3 song EP was released in November of 2011and landed them features in Filter Magazine, Under The Radar Magazine, and earned great reviews from several influential music blogs around the world.

Their debut full-length album "Another Boring Sunrise" was listed on several major music blog's "Most Anticipated Albums of 2012" lists and was self-released on Sept. 18th 2012. This album again landed them features in Under The Radar magazine, Filter Magazine, Band of the Day, and has earned several excellent reviews from numerous influential music critics around the world. Another Boring Sunrise has also spent 5 weeks on Bandcamp's "Best-Selling Digital Releases", and continues to grow world-wide as several songs from the album have been placed in numerous major motion pictures, national commercials and can be heard on the radio.

South Of France has shared the stage with major acts including Two Door Cinema Club, Divine Fits, Sea Wolf, Tamaryn, Youngblood Hawke and many more. With several scheduled showcases, they will be a staple at many of this year's festivals, they will continue to support other larger acts, and they will continue to pack venues as they headline their own shows around the country.

South of France's sound has been compared to: Peter Bjorn and John, Beach Fossils, Youth Lagoon, Belle and Sebastian, Real Estate, Tennis, Cults, Blondes, Ravonettes, Beach House.. etc.

Minted together by psychedelic, folk, rock, and doo-wop influences, Varlet is an indie genre-bending sonic dream layered over earthy, driving drums. On Varlet's November 2011 release, "The Drifter," Lilly Scott's vocals rise like bubbles bursting into a rocking jazz wail, as if Billie Holiday decided to resurrect and front a Neil Young-inspired indie act. The drums pulse with earthy distinction and song structures on guitar, lap steel, and piano range from classical composition, to jazz, to intricately woven '60s and '70s psychedelic progressions.

Yet Varlet's lyrical content may be the grittiest element the band offers on The Drifter. All members collaborate on each track's instrumentation and lyrics. Their partnership creates tangible narrative settings in every song on the new album: Perhaps Varlet is exploring the female experience of constructed identity ("High Heels", "Lady Lie"), or delivering straightforward commentary on the subculture of a city big enough to raise social adrenaline, yet small enough to wrap around yourself ("Eastern", "In My Pocket"). Fast riffs over folk elements pound your heart steadily into your throat as you listen to the only current female-fronted act delivering haunted, candid lyrics about modern urban life, without packaging that content into a gimmick.

The Drifter realizes Varlet's artistic vision to effect a striking amalgam of experimental folk with pulsing rock and roll undertones.

"VAR-LET" -- A Shakespearian word meaning a rogue: a deceitful and unreliable scoundrel.

After too much time freelance writing and watching re-runs in a windowless Brooklyn basement, guitarist and songwriter Sadie Dupuis left New York City for the wilds of Northampton, MA in order to pursue a master's degree in poetry. In doing so, she began Speedy Ortiz, a self-recorded lo-fi project named after a minor character from the Love and Rockets comic series. Speedy Ortiz soon became something else entirely as bassist Darl Ferm, guitarist Matt Robidoux, and drummer Mike Falcone teamed up to form a full band, balancing abrasive noise with infectious earworms. The newly minted Speedy Ortiz quickly found an audience in the Boston DIY scene, playing frequently with their friends Pile, Grass is Green, Fat History Month, Sneeze, Krill, and Arvid Noe.

Almost immediately, the band recorded a two-song single, "Taylor Swift" and "Swim Fan," with Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Hole) and Justin Pizzoferrato (Chelsea Light Moving, Dinosaur Jr.), and self-released it in March of 2012. Shortly thereafter they spent a few weekends at the dingy yet atmospheric Sex Dungeon Studios in Philadelphia recording the Sports EP, a five-track, loosely conceptual 10" released that June on Exploding in Sound Records.

The creation of Major Arcana, their full-length debut, marks the evolution of Speedy Ortiz into a wholly collaborative effort. Darl leans toward basic, chunky parts, while Mike, a talented songwriter in his own right, helped arrange while also providing aggressive, boisterous drums. And Matt is a classically trained guitarist, but his experience in noise and experimental music comes through in his anti-melodic guitar solos, which counterbalance Sadie's angular, scalar guitar riffs and poppy vocals.

The end result is a band able to distill their influences and creative impulses into something at once dissonant and melodic, noisy yet undeniably pop.
