The Afrofunk Experience, winners of The NAACP Image Award's Outstanding World Music Album "Black President" and winners of The SF Weekly Music Award's Best International Act, have been the band behind Sila and the Afrofunk Experience from it's inception til 2010. Providing songs and "Killer Grooves" for Sila and The Afrofunk Experience and being dubbed "The Bay Area's Dance Kings" in the process. Home grown AFROFUNK. AFROBEAT. REGGAE, AND ORIGINAL BAY AREA FUNK" The ensemble's well-balanced instrumentation of dual guitars, bass, drums, percussion, and up to a trio of horns ensures a wide dynamic range. Band co-founder, and bassist Wendell Rand (Pleasuremaker, Tracorum, Youssoupha Siddibe), leads the cast off with his muscular, low end dance grooves. Tasteful, precise and very funky drummer, Paul Oliphant (Afrolicious, Will Magid, Yacouba Diarra), are serious studies in afrobeat/afrofunk and Jazz and rock drum work. Guitarist David James (Beth Custer), former six-string slinger for the Coup and Michael Franti's Spearhead, brings his explorative, sinewy, rhythmic approach to counter guitarist Ken Houses' (H. P. Riot, Wade Love Band), chunky funk rhythms and funk metal solos that recall the heyday of Parliament-Funkadelic. Saxophonist David Boyce (Broun Fellinis, Ronkat Spearman), trombonist Alan Williams ( Manicato, Ronkat) and trumpeter , Will Magid, (Solomon Burke, Baba Ken Okulolo) also "evoke powerful touchstones, from classic Wailers to Ethiopian-style R&B of the early '70s. AFE would like to introduce dynamic and powerfully sultry, lead vocalist, Sandy Tili (Wade Love band) There's a deep soulfulness here and the implication of cross-cultural solidarity."
Formed 1991 in San Francisco by Kevin Carnes, drums/sampler (Beatnigs, UAF), David Boyce, tenor/soprano saxophone, efx, synth, spoken word, and Kirk Peterson, electric bass.
The Broun Fellinis play a soulful and aggressive style of post modern improvised/composed jazzical sound that is informed by dub, afro beat, abstract funk, hardcore/psych/prog rock and film soundtracks. The group has been profiled on NPR and BET in the US and on Radio
Nova in France. Broun Fellinis have toured with Ben Harper and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and performed with many great acts such as The Last Poets, Meshell Ndegeocello, Living Colour, Erykah Badu, the Roots, Mos Def, Gil Scott-Heron, Zakir Hussain, Bernie Worrell, George Clinton, Jimmy Smith, General Public, Ravi Coltrane, and more.
