The Power Of The Riff 2013 Kickoff
The 2013 installment of the The Power Of The Riff festival in Los Angeles is right around the corner, this being the fourth annual occurrence of the massive event.
Curated and organized by Greg Anderson and Sam James Velde, The Power Of The Riff honors fans and musicians of all ages from within all walks and lifestyles under the umbrella of the heavy music underground. Tapping into a lineup that represents forefathers, milestones and current touring acts, while shedding light on up and coming bands and local acts, The Power Of The Riff festival is an all-day, all-ages event. The festival also includes an on-location record swap-meet of local stores and features pop-up stores by independent record labels and vendors, DJ sets between performances, a gourmet food truck court with some of Los Angeles' best purveyors of street food dining, and more.
The fourth annual The Power Of The Riff is spreading it's wings a bit more this time around, this year adding a pre-party on Friday, August 9th at The Echo. The massive full-day lineup the next day, Saturday, August 10th, at both The Echo and Echoplex, offers another stellar lineup of classic heavyweights, and crushing newcomers. The combined events offer 26 bands in total.

Southern Lord is proud to unleash the second album from Seattle's barbaric wrecking crew that is BLACK BREATH! Sentenced to Life is the highly-anticipated follow-up to the band's raging 2010 debut album, Heavy Breathing. The new album projects an even more vile, metallic sonic attack than it's predecessor... with a bit less rock and roll swagger and more full-on crushing death metal rage.
EARLY GRAVES formed in the Bay Area in early 2008 and have since released two full lengths, both on Metal Blade Records' imprint, Iron Clad Recordings. The band's sound has been described as a mixture of old school Swedish death metal and American hardcore punk and have drawn comparisons to Napalm Death, Carcass, Tragedy and Testament among other.
Sam James Velde (Vocals), Austin Barber (Bass), Stephen McBean (Guitar) and Flo Schanze (Drums).
They all played and play in other bands including Black Mountain, Saviours, Bluebird, Night Horse and Pink Mountaintops.
They all started playing together in November 2012.
They all like Black Sabbath and Black Flag.
They all live in Los Angeles, CA.
Debut 7 inch this summer on Outer Battery Records.
NOMADS are a "punk band" in the same way that an intercontinental ballistic missile is a "bomb." Mix the confrontational aggression of Black Flag with the stripped-down simplicity of English act Discharge with the glorious cacophony of Sweden's more recent crop of d-beat noisemeisters such as Disfear and Martyrdöd, and you've got Nomads, who might just be L.A.'s next big thing. Listening to one of their records is akin to having your eardrums punctured with an anvil. Hearing them live is even more intense. Things get rowdy real fast. Their frontman, who just goes by Michael, sings like a man who fully believes each breath might be his last. They playpretty much every weekend (check their site), but you'd best get there early: Their sets frequently clock in at less than 10 minutes. Consider bringing a helmet.
Creative Adult comes from the diverse musical breeding ground of California’s North Bay Punk scene. The band surged the scene last year playing shows with Ceremony, Nü Sensae and Lewd Acts alongside their debut 7” Dead Air, which was released on their own Broke Hatre Collective. The four song sonic blast careens between the harsh, noisy punk of Scratch Acid and Gang of Four while carrying the brooding emotion of Joy Division’s darkest moments. The bands most recent EP, Bulls In The Yard takes the band further down the vibing, manic path of their debut and wanders further into flourishes of contemplative effects – laden post punk. These four writhing bursts are akin to an acid-fueled paranoia grafted together with the spastic energy of garage greats like MC5 and Murder City Devils. The band has recently announced they're debut LP is finished an in production, but have made no mention as to when it will be released.
