The Shady Horns
Sam Kininger and Ryan Zoidis aka 'The Shady Horns' bring the rage as the original and current horn section of Lettuce. In addition to Lettuce, both have been consistently tapped to tour with Soulive throughout the years and appear on numerous Soulive releases including Next, Break Out, and Soulive's soon to be released Up Here. Sam and Ryan stay active outside the Lettuce/Soulive arena - Kininger leads his own Sam Kininger Band, featuring Amy Bowles (keys), Aaron Bellamy (bass) and Nikki Glaspie (drums), as well as an assortment of other rotating musicians. The follow up to his self-titled debut, 'Anthem' was recently released in Japan in 2008. Hailing from Portland, ME, Zoidis is a member of hometown heroes The Rustic Overtones who toured extensively throughout the 90s and recently reunited, dropping Viva Nueva in July 2008, featuring David Bowie.
Nigel Hall is an honest, humble guardian of soul music. When asked about himself, Nigel reflects, "I'm just someone who lives, eats, drinks music." This ethic becomes clear when Nigel takes the stage. A mainstay on the Portland, ME scene, Nigel has recently toured with the funk powerhouse Lettuce. His energetic vocals add yet another layer of sonic depth and energy to the all star cast. Nigel is also an established keyboardist, currently working in the studio with Chapter 2, featuring Eric Krasno, Adam Deitch, and Louis Kato.
Akashic Record is Boston's premier funk machine. The concept and sound is inspired by the Hammond organ driven grooves of the soul jazz and funk outfits of the 60's and 70's. Playing consistently in the Northeast over the last 7 years, their floor shakin' live show continues to thrill capacity crowds night after night.
Akashic Record is lead by organist Beau Sasser (Melvin Sparks Band) and trombonist Brian Thomas (John Brown's Body, Lettuce, Soulive) and has been blessed to have welcomed a rotating cast of members including Johnny Trama, Timo Shanko, Louis Cato, Darby Wolf, Jeff Lockhart, and Ken Clark. Morphing into a quintet lineup in 2004, the group solidified with Tom Arey on drums, Mike Tucker on tenor sax and Jason Yost on guitar. This line-up recorded their debut release "New Days Ahead" and began to spread to funk throughout the Northeast.
The current line-up of Brian Thomas on trombone, Jared Sims on baritone sax, Beau Sasser on organ, Steve Fell on guitar, and Peter MacLean on drums recorded and released AR's most recent effort "Theosophy" in October of 2010.
Akashic Record has gone on to share the bill with legends Steely Dan, Michael MacDonald, Chicago, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Soulive. Special guests have included Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC), Melvin Sparks, The JGB, Tom Sholz (Boston), NEPHROK!, Sam Kininger (Soulive), Ryan Zoidis (Lettuce), Alan Evans (Soulive), Jarrett Cordes (PM Dawn), John Ellis (Charlie Hunter Trio), Gordon Beedle (Jimmy Smith) and Fareed Haque (Garaj Mahal).
Otis Grove began as a collective experiment in crossing the traditional jazz sound with funk and Hip-Hop rhythms. It was the beginning of a sound based in groove, free in improvisation, yet rooted in songwriting and soulful melodies. Based out of Boston, the band began spreading their sound to New England clubs in 2002. The music, which has since evolved into a unique blend of soulful organ funk and garage rock, pays tribute to the masters while consistently pushing itself in new directions.
Six years, over 500 national shows, and one UK tour later, Otis Grove is hitting it harder then ever. The trio - known for their high-energy, dance inducing, dynamic live perfomances - signed with Ropeadope Digital records in early 2008 and is currently promoting their 2nd studio album, "Crank It UP".
