The New Mastersounds
In the late 1990’s, guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts was running a club night in Leeds called “The Cooker.” When The Cooker moved into a new venue with a second floor in 1999, there was space and the opportunity to put a live band together to complement the DJ sets. Simon Allen and Eddie had played together in 1997 as The Mastersounds, though with a different bassist and no organ. Through friends and the intimate nature of the Leeds music scene, Pete Shand and Bob Birch were added on bass and Hammond respectively, and The New Mastersounds were born. Though it was raw, and more of a boogaloo sound at first, it was powerful from the start. Their first rehearsal was hot enough for Blow it Hard Records to release on two limited-edition 7” singles in 2000.
Fast-forward 15 years and the recorded catalogue boasts 24 more 7” singles, 9 studio albums, 2 live albums, 1 remix album and 3 compilation albums, released variously in UK, USA and Japan, where they continue to tour extensively. Joe Tatton, another veteran of the Leeds scene, joined back in 2007, replacing Bob Birch on organ and piano.
After 17 years of musical camaraderie, Jordan Linit (Kinetix/Ableminds) and Josh Fairman (Kinetix) have created Analog Son.
Based around a studio project involving The Shady Horns (Soulive), Joe Tatton (The New Mastersounds), Ivan Neville (Dumpstaphunk)
and Joey Porter (The Motet/Juno What?!) as well as some of Denver’s finest local talent (members of The Congress, Fox Street All Stars, Kinetix, Rebel Tounge, Devon Parker, Convergence) Analog Son will released their self-titled debut in the spring of 2014.
“some funky, trippy jazz-funk from an awesome set of players.”- Joe Tatton
This funky brainchild was born at Scanhope Sound in fall 2013. While Josh and Jordan had conceptualized this project for years, much of the composition was impromptu as each guest musician brought their own unique brand of artistry to the table stirring up a sizzling musical melting pot.
Their first single, “Analog Island” showcases the unmistakable articulation and harmony of Ryan Zoidis and Eric Bloom(The Shady Horns) as their melodies naturally integrate with Josh and Jordan’s rhythmic chemistry and vision to create a fresh funk-fusion project. The end result takes advantage of modern production and technology while using the finest vintage equipment and tape machines to fuse together both classic engineering and modern musicianship.
This studio finesse translates effortlessly into the live setting. In their short existence, Analog Son has supported The Funky Meters, Trombone Shorty
& Orleans Avenue, The New Mastersounds and Orgone at some of Colorado’s premiere venues. Live audio engineer, Joe Michaels (The Rolling Stones; Larry Graham; Blood, Sweat and Tears), immediately remarks on the authentic funk revival Linit and Fairman have managed to pull off. He states that “mixing these guys is like pure funk heaven....reminds me of my Larry Graham days!”Analog Son’s debut album will be available April 1, 2014 and the CD release party will take place at Cervantes’ Other Side on March 28 with special guests.
