Matthew, Kevin and Marie, the three members of Worshyper met when Matthew’s brother Keith began the philadelphia experimental pop project Power Animal in 2008. Through the years the trio have continuously collaborated, in the spring of 2012 in a basement in South Philadelphia Kevin and Matthew began working on what would be the earliest Worshyper material. Simple & emotive casio passages with raw energetic percussion arrangements laid the foundation for Matthew and Marie to find their individual voices. In September of 2012 via Human Kindness Overflowing, a Philadelphia based charitable label run by Keith Hampson, Worshyper released their debut ep, ‘Happened’.
Over the course of 2013 the group have offered numerous inspired live performances; testing the material that would comprise their forthcoming debut album, ‘Keeps’. The album is an unapologetic document, bringing to light Worshyper’s most distilled strengths. Written in the winter and spring of 2013 while living together in the vibrant & sobering Kensington neighborhood of North Philadelphia, the album intends to reflect the dichotomy of its conceived environment, personifying the bleak urban harshness while championing the aching hope and unchained joy that willingly thrive in the face of adversity.
Sylvan Esso is a collaboration between vocalist Amelia Meath and electronic musician Nick Sanborn. Meath’s powerful voice is front and center, unjoined by fellow harmonizers as it is in her folk group, Mountain Man. Sanborn, who plays bass in the genre-destroying Megafaun, creates intricate, pulsing grooves for Meath’s voice to inhabit. The pair’s debut is the Hey Mami / Play It Right 12″, a “single” with 2 A sides, featuring accapella and instrumental versions of each song. The record will be released July 16, 2013 on Trekky Records.
Philadelphia duo Lockets make their return after a two year hiatus. The group consists of principal songwriter/producer Todd Mendelsohn and new addition, vocalist, Melissa Ricca. Lockets have been likened to contemporaries such as Beachhouse, the influential Cocteau Twins, and have been described as "an innocent, fledgling My Bloody Valentine jacked up on a whole Halloween's worth of candy." They've previously shared stages with groups such as Mr. Twin Sister, Sylvan Esso, Exit Music, Widowspeak, and St. Lucia. The group offered up their synth-laced brand of dream-pop on their debut LP Camera Shy via London's Beautiful Strange label in 2012. They returned in the summer of 2013 with their Surrender EP that boasted an evolved sound featuring driving electronic beats and anthemic hooks drenched in an 80's synth-pop aesthetic. The lead single Surrender earned repeated spins on BBC-Radio 1, cracked the top 40 on the UK's Amazing Radio and was featured along with their track Girl on Bella Union label head and Cocteau Twins member Simon Raymonde's radio show. Mendelsohn and Ricca are currently in the process of recording Lockets' sophmore LP in anticipation of a 2016 release.
