“Island Head is an important project to reggae. It’s always great to have substantive, high art. This work contributes to reggae’s growth. Reminds others of what it really is and what is still possible. I feel so especially blessed to share this brilliant work with our audience.” Pat McKay, program director - SiriusXM The Joint
Neil Jason – bass, David Frank – keyboards, Tim Cappello – sax, Andy Bassford – guitar, Mikey ‘Mao’ Chung – guitar, Don Harris – trumpet, Billy Messinetti - drums
Take two legendary reggae guitarists, add one of the most influential keyboard players in pop /R&B history, layer two of the most eclectic horn players in the world on top of some of the funkiest rockin’ New York City bass and drums, then…let it simmer down.
The debut album by the band Island Head plays music for people who love the islands, the beaches, the lifestyle and most of all, THE MUSIC! It is reggae at it’s core and also has elements of jamband rock, jazz and funk. The players in this all-star line-up have won Grammys, played on, arranged, produced and written hit songs, appeared on television, in movies and toured the world.
Using mostly compositions by Bob Marley, this band combines the essence of their collective musical lifetime experiences. “We take the listener on a musical journey to a fun place where there is jamming, dancing, laughing, partying and all the things that everyone loves about music. We wanted to make a recording that would remind us why we are musicians.
“Island Head musicians tastefully demonstrate that a fresh perspective can still be brought to Bob Marley music.” – Dermot Hussey, Legendary Jamaican Radio Personality
"Island Head are one of the few bands that have an original take on the music, Hipreggaejazzrockvibe." - Cableman Dan, "Reggae & World Rhythms" on WNTI-FM
"So Much Trouble in the World" has been in regular rotation on SiriusXM The Joint since Nov 2012. The entire album has been featured in Jamaica on the show 'Riffin' by Dermot Hussey and many other radio shows. The album "Punky Reggae Party" by Island Head is fundamentally reggae but, it is all instrumental with a unique approach. The melodies are shared by trumpet, sax, guitar and keyboard.
The two guitarists are legendary reggae players - Andy Bassford (Toots & The Maytals) and Mikey ‘Mao’ Chung (Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru). Neil Jason (bass) was in John Lennon’s band and the Brecker Brothers band. David Frank (keys) from the band The System, played on many hits such as “Sussudio” and “Higher Love”. Tim Cappello (sax) is famous from his years with Tina Turner and Don Harris (trumpet) played with the Allman Brothers, Tower of Power and Nile Rodgers & Chic. Our website has bios on the band.
Billy Messinetti produced the album as well as playing drums and percussion. Billy said; “A passion for reggae and love for musicians interacting and jamming are why Island Head was created. We recorded the album live which allowed the musicians a chance to step out, yet it is very listenable. Grammy award winning engineer/producer Dave O’Donnell did an incredible job mixing the record at Germano Studios, NYC.”
