The Congos are a reggae vocal group from Jamaica active on and off from the mid-1970s until the present day. They are best known for their Heart of the Congos album, recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry.
The Congos formed as the duo "Ashanti" Roy Johnson and Cedric Myton, later becoming a trio with the addition of Watty Burnett. Myton had previously been a member of The Tartans in the late 1960s (along with Prince Lincoln Thompson, Devon Russell and Lindburgh Lewis), and Ras Michael's group, and had recorded with Thompson's Royal Rasses in the mid-1970s. He formed the Congos, initially as a duo with Johnson, recording the single "At the Feast" for Lee "Scratch" Perry. Perry expanded the group to a trio with the addition of Burnett, this line-up recording the classic roots reggae album Heart of the Congos in 1977 at Perry's Black Ark studio.The album featured illustrious backing singers such as Gregory Isaacs, The Meditations, and Barry LLewellyn and Earl Morgan of The Heptones. The album has been described as "the most consistently brilliant album of Scratch's entire career".
Cameron Stallones began his musical career as a founding member of the experimental psychedelic rock collective Magic Lantern. Soon after, demos originally intended to light the Lantern became the first Sun Araw LP: The Phynx. Sun Araw blossomed as a solo project in attempted geosynchronous orbit with the Eternal Now: oblique six-dimensional transmissions from changeless environs. Structural and spiritual inspiration for Sun Araw comes primarily from Cameron's first artistic love: film and filmmakers, especially those invested in the long-take (Tarkovsky, Altman, Bela Tarr, Greenaway). Devoted to long-form mantric music, the ethos is similar: straight lampin' in deep focus, angle after angle on the melodic object, gaining strength from the subsequent breakdown of the illusion of fixed perspective.
Since 2007, 4 full-length LPs, 3 EPs, and 5 cassettes have walked the mind-planes from psychedelic drone to melted afrobeat, from warped dub to minimal composition. These releases have been praised in Wire Magazine (who selected Heavy Deeds as one of the top 50 records of 2008, and On Patrol in the top 50 of 2010), The New Yorker, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Uncut Magazine, Mojo, Pitchfork, and beyond. Sun Araw has performed in the US, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand with hundreds of artists including luminaries like Christian Fennesz and Konono No. 1. In early 2011, Cameron and M. Geddes Gengras traveled to Jamaica where they produced and recorded a collaboration album with roots reggae legends The Congos, set for release in the fall. While in and around Kingston, they also began producing dancehall singles and tracking local toasters under the name Duppy Gun Productions, which will be seeing release this summer.
M. Geddes Gengras
M. GEDDES GENGRAS has spent the last 7 years as a fixture in the Los Angeles experimental music scene. Most recently, he was recognized for his collaboration with SUN ARAW and roots-reggae legends THE CONGOS (2012's ICON GIVE THANK) which received praise from such far-flung publications as The New York Times, Pitchfork, The Wire (#2 album of 2012), and Artforum. He has logged time as a member/producer of many bands such as SUN ARAW, POCAHAUNTED, L.A. VAMPIRES, ROBEDOOR, and, most recently, AKRON/FAMILY. With Sun Araw's Cameron Stallones, he co-founded Duppy Gun Productions, a label that links up American producers with vocalists from Jamaica and is currently distributed by STONES THROW RECORDS. His solo work is based in modular synthesis and comfortably straddles a variety of forms, (kosmische, drone, experimental, musique concrète, and techno, to name a few) while remaining rooted in a deep affinity for the limitations of analog synthesis and a keen ear for timbral manipulation. Recently Gengras released his first solo lp (Test Leads) on Intercoastal Artists/Holy Mountain, a 12" ep under his PERSONABLE guise for the L.A.-based label Peak Oil, and toured the US and Canada with LAUREL HALO and ITAL.
'...he flies under his birth name for 'Test Leads', perhaps his purest and most honest revelation to date; two sprawling sides of throbbing womb bass, glinting arpeggios and awning drones split into four tracks. 'Waldorf Pts. 1 & 2' unfurl across the first, calling to mind the classic topographies of Klaus Schulze's 'Dune' LP while ascending spiralling synths through mind-expanding strata until the momentum tips into full blown 4/4 throb and raga-esque whorls like some Goan trance bliss out. A heady 'part 3' concludes that trip on the flipside, but not before 'Night Work' pushes into deep into svelte techno psychedelia and the spindly hyper-rhythmic pulses, thrumming bass and swarming dissonance of 'Cairo' acutely recalls Conrad Schnitzler at his earliest and best.' - BOOMKAT

Geddes Gengras let rip a 15-minute blast of analog beats and synth tones, ranging from deep bass to high-pitched signal skree.
