Mother Falcon is an orchestral indie band born in Austin, Texas that has quickly become an award winning recording act and a top concert draw, performing in rock clubs while maintaining a presence in the performing arts scene scoring plays and films.
The group began to coalesce around multi-instrumentalist and composer Nick Gregg while the members were still teenagers, coming together via orchestral and chamber music classes. Composing as a collective, the 18 piece ensemble includes several multi-instrumentalists and most of the players contribute vocals. Guitarist/pianist Claire Puckett, accordionist/pianist Tamir Kalifa and percussionist/saxophonist Issac Winburne form the creative core along with Nick Gregg, though all members contribute musically.
Special Guest Alex Weston
Alex’s compositions have been performed in many cities throughout the US. The Lyrica Chamber Music Ensemble, a New York metropolitan area chamber group, awarded one of his compositions, the string quartet, “Simple Machines”, their Student Composers award. The piece was premiered by faculty from the Longy School of Music. The group also commissioned Alex for a piano concerto, performed in March 2012 by pianist David Kaplan and awarded an honorable mention in the ASCAP Young Composers Award. A piece for big band, “Cover”, was performed by the
Carnegie Mellon Jazz Ensemble and was a finalist for the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award . In June, 2013, the Utah Wind Symphony closed their season with a commission entitled "The Loud Calligraphy of Lightning".
Alex also works as a music assistant to Philip Glass, aiding the composer by preparing scores, recording demos for film scores, making orchestral reduction, and whatever else is required. Recently, Alex traveled to Linz, Austria, to help record the score to “Visitors”, a new movie in Godrey
Reggio’s “Qatsi” series, with the Bruckner Orchestra and Dennis Russell Davies, set for a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, 2013.
As a film score composer, Alex has scored over 15 short films and recently completed his first feature film. Projects he has worked on have screened at the SoHo International Film Festival, the Palm Springs Shortfest, and the New York City International Film Festival.
In collaboration with the “In the Basement Theater Company”
in Pittsburgh, he was selected for the Future Tenant “Trespass” Residency Series. He provided the full underscoring and contributed to the artistic direction for his group’s original dance/movement piece, “Within Distance,” that enjoyed a sold out run of performances. The project was a featured event in the Pittsburgh City Paper. Alex also currently serves as composer in residence for New York based theater company, “True False Theater”.
Alex currently performs with several different bands in New York City. His first EP of original pop music, "Monsters!", was released in September, 2011. He also regularly contributes synth parts to synth-pop band, My Great Ghost. Alex's new EP of original songs is currently in production, to be released in September 2013.
"Alex Weston’s piece was a knockout. The composer explained it as an attempt to mimic the wavering quality of poor radio reception, but that was just the beginning. With its interchange of straight-ahead tonalities and fluttering on/off-pitch microtones, it was a workout for the ensemble, but they were up to it" - lucid culture
"'The Loud Calligraphy of Lightning' demonstrated remarkable talent by Weston" - Rebecca Howard, Salt Lake Tribune.
