Black Landlord is an exceptional new sound for hip-hop today. It
combines all the elements of an old Mowtown review with classic old
school Hi-Hop. Straight outta Philly Black Landlord is set on
collectin’ the rent. The motto, “Rent is due on the 1st not the 5th
The founder Maxx was a member and lead rapper of The Goats(Ruff House
Records; Cypress Hill, The Fugees, Kriss Kross)where he became
politically motivated musically and helped write the groundbreaking Lp
Tricks of the Shade. After the Goats Broke up in 1997 Maxx formed
Incognegro with Dj Smoove and Mark Boyce, both of the Goats. After
releasing one self titled album the group went on the road where Maxx
met French electro producers Olaf Hund and Léonard de Léonard and
began his solo carrer.
Maxx then moved to Berlin, Germany and began working on his solo album
with Olaf and Leonard de Leonard. After this album was completed he
left Berlin and moved back to Philly album in hand. He then took these
electro hip-hop tracks and began working with a few friends. They took
these tracks and began to re-work them into what is now Black
Landlord. These friends are made up of local musicians who Maxx had
worked with or partied with in some shape or form. Drummer Bob
Bannon(Psyclone rangers) and Bass player Bruce Rekon(Delta 72) were
the first people Maxx called. After laying down the basics he then
called in horn players Micheal Tramontana and Kenneth Brune. The
hornplay is what makes Black Landlord something special. The final
touches were guitar player Adam Campos, percussion player Mark
Soulstien and back-up vocalist Al Tango. Trumpet Player Henning Thomas
was delivered from Germany to help round out the horn section. Mark
Boyce(The Goats,G-love) smoothed it all out by recroding keybords on
Black Landlords first release “Munf ta Munf Lease” Working together
they turned the electro hip-hop tracks into something organic.
Inspired by the funk and soul of Mowtown and Stacks recording artist,
Black Landlord is all about making ya move. The live shows are filled
with the energy of a back yard Bbq or North Philly Block party. Set
to release their self titled debut album
on Rope-A-Dope Digital, Black Landlord is, at the end of the day,
friends playing music that makes them happy. Oh yeah and collecting
the f’n rent! Don’t be late bitches!
S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D: Sociopathic Time Altering Robot Warrior Of Organic Design
Sent back in time from Planet Vitrus moments before the planet’s destruction in the year 2776 A.D, Gabriel Starwood was created to alter the time continuum in an attempt to control the ever expanding Human Race: intergalactic cosmos devourers and the eventual destroyers of Vitrus. As an advanced cyborg capable of entering and controlling the human body via nanotechnology, Gabriel has inhabited historically influential Earthlings since the dawn of man, from Jesus Christ and Joan of Arc to Angela Davis and The Marquis De Sade.
Accompanied by a small, yet crucial team of Vitruvian Androids, the Propaganda Performance module of the S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. mission has taken form as a “Cyber Rock” quintet. Raising the awareness of mankind for the sake of the cosmos, a typical S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. performance centers on the values of the Vitruvian species, their eventual destruction at the hands of the expansionist hordes, and the S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. prototype’s mass manipulation of the Human race.
The quintet is comprised of a classical pianist, an effected bass guitar, an analog synthesizer, looped and effected vocals, and drums. Theatrical in presentation, primal in execution, and psychedelic in nature, the resulting sound is comparable to that of a woolly mammoth being downed by laser-spears, falling face first into a pagan orgy.
Dj Smoove spinning throughout the night!
DJ Sean Smoove started DJing at age 13, in West Philadelphia where he grew up. He began DJing under DJ Jazzy Jeff who mentored him at this early age. After DJing at house parties for 5 years, DJ Smoove met and helped create what would become known as the infamous hip-hop/rock band “The Goats” (see below). Signed to Columbia Records in 1989, DJ Smoove began his career as the DJ for the band touring worldwide, from the U.S. to France and Germany. He performed with bands/groups including: Fishbone, the Beastie Boys, Bad Brains, Cypress Hill, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, A Tribe Called Quest, and many other big headlining acts. In ’95-’96, the group decided to call it quits and DJ Smoove would move on to DJ at popular nightclubs in and around Philly. In 1996, DJ Smoove began a resident DJ position at a New York-based record store located in Philly called HMV. DJ Smoove‘s daily tasks included DJing and making announcements about in-store promotions and up-coming events at such places as Electric Factory and the Trocadero. Three years later, DJ Smoove and friends traveled to a small town in Brazil to learn Pro Tools. He would spend 8 months here DJing daily in a bar for locals and tourists. He did this for no pay and strictly for the LOVE of music. In 2000, DJ Smoove returned to the states to begin establishing Smoove Entertainment. He continues to DJ in nightclubs and bars in the Philly and tri-state areas along with New York.
