Trio Flux CD Release with Trio Subtonic!

Trio Flux

Trio Flux is the collaborative effort of three talented Portland musicians, Neil Mattson (guitar), Julio Appling (bass), and Adam Ochshorn (drums). The trio brings together a wide array of musical moods and textures, stretching the bounds of the traditional guitar-bass-drums jazz trio. Trio Flux, as the name suggests, adeptly moves through its funky grooves, its dark and distorted rock gestures, to its twangy free-jazz improvisations with a focus on musical dialogue between the three. The band strives to have a unique sound but doesn’t deny its influences. Guitarist Neil Mattson’s compositions betray his listening habits, Ornette Coleman, Bill Frisell, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden, and Pat Metheny, to name a few.

Trio Subtonic

Trio Subtonic has made their mark on the Northwest independent and jazz music scenes, crafting three albums worth of original compositions by its family members: on keys, Galen Clark; on bass, Bill Athens; and on drums, Jesse Brooke. In 2009 "Cave Dweller" received national attention for striking a balance between unique groove, catchy melody, and overall drinkability. The incorporation of jazz and brazilian traditions with non-stop funky fervor poses the question to the dance floor: is it better to stop for a moment and listen, or to have never listened at all?

$9 in advance • $12 day of show

Trio Flux celebrates the release of the band’s second album, a collaborative effort entitled Möbius. On the heels of the album’s successful Kickstarter funding campaign, Trio Flux will perform the record in its entirety, in addition to new material and choice selections from their first release. The trio will be joined in this performance by many special guests who appeared on the record, including the award-winning blues guitarist Mary Flower, tenor saxophonist Marc Hutchinson , trumpeter James M. Gregg, and keyboardist Jake Savage. Trio Subtonic opens the night with a set of groovy soul-jazz.
