So Many Wizards
What makes So Many Wizards a band to watch is its off-kilter sense of melody and song structure. Lead single “Inner City” has a caffeinated, pogo-stick verse melody catchier than most bands’ sharpest choruses; the trippy, inward gem “Best Friends” unwinds deceptively sophisticated chord changes while Kazerouni demonstrates his sweetest falsetto—it’s a heartfelt plea for an idyllic romance, as innocently sweet as a second grader’s Crayola-penned birthday card (“I don’t care what we do / Don’t care, as long as there’s a park and then a bench for two / I don’t care what we do / And as long as we can sit”).
Kera and the Lesbians
Kera and the Lesbians, hailing from San Diego and currently residing in Los Angeles, lovingly refer to their musical style as 'bipolar folk'. Bipolar in the sense that in one song drummer Michael will pound his drums, expelling his demons with sheer force, while Kera croons and screams and serenades, enchanting all within earshot. Eamon's guitar playing is reminiscent of sleepy desert afternoons, spent on porches accompanied by the smell of leather and aging wood, while Phil's bass lines get the crowd moving and grooving. Brandon's use of brass is at once warm and rounded, but so tactfully manipulated that it inevitably raises goosebumps. The lyrics more literally embody the band's polarity, telling tales of anxiety, friendship, insanity and ill-fated love, from Kera's very unique point of view.
This is a band to see live. Kera's passion is tangible, at times bringing the crowd to tears, but most consistently keeping a dancing crowd completely enraptured, hanging onto every word her very expressive being has to sing. She brings heaps of charm to the set, with her joking between songs and her Elvis-like dance moves, it's obvious that she and the whole band live for this. Their range has allowed them to perform with a diverse list of acts including Devendra Banhart and Crystal Castles.
The band has a definite DIY work ethic, having self released two EPs and a debut full-length coming. They also do their own booking and artwork internally. Their newest single 'NAILBITER' is a manic blues track covering one of Kera's most aggravating habits and instilling in the listener a mounting feeling of tension that it mercifully relieves, while still giving a taste of the madness of obsession.
Not long ago, the members of Motive were shredding through jazz lead sheets and getting carted across the U.S. and Europe to showcase their young talent. Nowadays, Motive populates a different scene. These Seattle transplants, turned Brooklynites, emerged from a Clinton Hill, Brooklyn practice space onto stages around the city and are rapidly taking NYC – and the internet – by storm. Known for their grunge influenced indie rock sound, Motive's catchy, hook laced songwriting shines through on the latest single, "What's So Bad?", which was Produced & Mixed by Chuck Brody (Phantogram, Bear Hands, Ra Ra Riot). The videos for "What's So Bad?" and "It's Illicit" recently caught the attention of MTV and both premiered on MTV2's 120 Minutes with Matt Pinfield. The videos quickly skyrocketed to #2 and #12 on MTV.com's Most Popular video chart, topping artists such as Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, and Imagine Dragons- a rare feat for an unsigned band.
Motive is currently preparing to release a new EP and a series of high concept music videos to accompany the release, and recently had their cover of Talking Heads "Psycho Killer" featured in a Jean Paul Gaultier video released by the popular fashion/music/and culture publication, TWELV Magazine.
Motive has shared the stage with: Walk The Moon, The Vaccines, Bear Hands, Free Energy, Oberhofer, etc.
Let's call these guys The Strokes 2.0. Dressed in slick skinny-tie suits, these Seattle transplants peddle pure melodic rock, with catchy hooks that recall the best moments of The Killers and the fuzzy vocals that remind us of a more cheerful Julian Casablancas. With their videos getting top-ratings on MTV.com, soon everyone will have some Motive of their own.
