Amplifying a style best described as underground Tech-House with a Progressive flair, the Orlando, Florida native is an internationally acclaimed DJ and Producer. One of the first American DJs to play at the prestigious Ministry of Sound in London, Kimball has also performed at some of the top nightclubs in the world including the legendary Velfarre (Tokyo), Womb (Tokyo), Exogroove (Italy), Zap Club (UK), Club Volume (Seoul), 808 Club (Bangkok), Bed Supperclub (Bangkok), Renaissance (U.K), and Globe (Italy) Space (Miami), Avalon (Boston) Sound Factory (New York) to name but a few. Considered a gifted technical DJ by many including his peers, he has shared the main stage with a who's who of top International DJs and has held residencies throughout the past 2 decades at some of the top clubs including Crobar, Motor, Spundae, Utopia and the legendary AAHZ. He currently resides in Bangkok, Thailand were he is a resident DJ at the long-running Qbar Nightclub.
Known affectionately as the Godfather of Progressive House and as one of the original Aahz Dj's, Dave Cannalte has long been credited with formulating the once vibrant Orlando underground dance scene. His love of uplifting dance music has kept him busy entertaining crowds in America as well as Europe for well over a decade.
Arriving in Florida in 1987, he took over Orlando's popular alternative music night called SPIT. A year and half later, he left to pursue a prestigious position as head music programmer for Walt Disney World's Pleasure Island. It was at this time that he met relative newcomer Kimball Collins, who took over residency duties for Dave at SPIT. Kimball had also just started up at Orlando's infamous Beacham Theater and quickly reciprocated by asking Dave to be his co-resident. Their Saturday nights (known as "Aahz") are legendary, and many of today's most accomplished Florida DJ's and producers were regulars, including Chris Fortier, Andy Hughes, and Sean Cusick.
Dave and Kimball, along with promoter Stace Bass, were the first to bring international acts to Orlando. Sasha, Dave Seaman, John Digweed, and Cosmic Baby all had their Florida debut at Aahz.
Dave continued to dj at Pleasure Island's cutting edge video club Cage and eventually took over residency at Mannequins, PI's flagship club. It was here he met and encouraged a young Jimmy Van M to pursue his dreams of djing and producing music. When Aahz closed in 1992, he started travelling to cities such as Charlotte, Atlanta, San Francisco and New York City. During this time he established himself as one of America's premier progressive DJ's. In 1996, Dave made his European debut, playing in Germany, England, and Scotland. During the next few years his U.S. travels increased, and he was regularily on bills with such heavyweights as Sasha, Digweed, Paul Van Dyk and Josh Wink. He also played in countries such as Canada and Central America.
In late 1996, he took on programming duties for the US based promotion company, Promo Only, helping create their successful Import CD series. Dave left Disney World in late 2000 to work at Promo Only on a full-time basis, focusing on programming, and their newly acquired DVD series.
While not a regular name on the production side of things, Dave has several local label credits to his name including a remix of Dj Icey's "Dreams". In 1996, he co-wrote and co-produced Sam Mollisons single "Always On My Mind". The following year, he took on a remix for Underground Records. Original studio productions and a mixed compilation are all due from Dave sometime in late 2006. Dave currently holds residencies in three Orlando clubs, and travels regularily across the country, and to Mexico and Canada.
While many people may claim to know Chris’ sound, with their focus on labeling him one thing
or another, Chris is equally as focused on his efforts to push back the musical boundaries. It
is testament to the man that he continues to develop his sound and musical direction, after all,
as the man says himself “I just like to play good underground music, I don’t limit myself. I am
growing musically everyday, and the music I create and play reflects that”
It is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music
scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’ determination to continue to
push the envelope can be seen in all aspects of his career. Proof of this can be found on his now
classic triple CD compilation Balance and his recent solo productions including his stellar debut
artist album As Long As The Moment Exits.
The Balance 007 CD was a integral part of the now worldwide successful Balance series and
brand. The album was a musical forecast of the fresh and exciting underground movement as
we know it today. It is little wonder the CD was name checked for compilation of the year by
numerous international magazines and websites. Taking his production a step further in 2007,
his debut artist album was released to countless plaudits and impeccable praise. Followed by the
remix version of the album saw Chris work along side the likes of Joel Mull, Ed Davenport, Mark
Broom, Someone Else, Bruno Pronsato, Pheek and Maetrik.
Under his 40oz production guise Chris has released the several EPs and remixes that musically
spreads comfortably across labels such as Bedrock, Wave Music, Cocoon, Kompakt or Get
Physical. Recent remixes of Jim Rivers, Pfirter, Alexi Delano, Adultnapper, Derek Marin, Alland
Byallo and John Selway, show Chris’ genre defying sound at it’s underground best. Not satisfied
with status quo,, Chris looks for the boundaries to continue to be pressed and pushed with each
coming musical excursion
Chris has been a consistent figure on the world tour circuit with a professional DJ career
spanning 19 plus years. He has continually been a crowd favorite, confirmed by his very first
residency at the legendary “Aahz” in Orlando through to residencies at The Cross in London and
at Twilo in his adopted home of New York. Behind numerous singles, remixes, artist albums and
no less than 9 commercially released mix albums, you can catch him as easily in Tokyo as in
Buenos Aires and all points in between on any given weekend.
To those that know Fortier’s history, they know to expect plenty more to come, for those that are
just getting initiated, Welcome!
