Bands of The Big Sky: The Funk Session

Kung Fu Kongress

Kung Fu Kongress has become a staple of the Missoula music scene over the past two years, having shared the stage with Galactic, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Wailers, Dumpstaphunk, and Orgone. Due to these influences, as well as the likes of Lettuce, Snarky Puppy, and Soulive, Kung Fu has developed an eclectic sound that lives somewhere in the realm between funk, jazz, hip hop, rock, progressive and soul. Having paid dues to their influences, as well as putting on entire shows devoted to The Beatles, Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, and Led Zeppelin, Kung Fu Kongress is now venturing into the territory of original music. Now emerged from the cave the kongressmen have inhabited the past year, the new album "Playin' Hard To Get" has been released with a bang, and is available in hard copy, or digitally on iTunes, Amazon, GooglePlay, Facebook and more for $5, as well as streaming on Spotify and many more!

Josh Farmer Band

Missoula's home-grown Josh Farmer Band have been bringing their unique blend of jazz, funk, rock, and soul music to the local scene since Fall 2011. The band has quickly gained a growing audience, regularly headlining shows at Missoula venues like The Top Hat, The Union Club, The Badlander, Sean Kelly's, and Monk's.

Their debut EP album was released in September 2012 and has gathered praise both for Josh's original songwriting and for compelling instrumental performances by the whole band. The CD is available at Rockin' Rudy's and Ear Candy Music, or digitally through iTunes and the Facebook page's Music Store.

The "Video EP" is a collection of music videos released in April 2013 that make up Josh Farmer Band's second release. These videos are not intended to complement a CD release, but rather to present the new music in a performance setting, to see and hear this dynamic band as they truly are. The four short films of the band playing for a live audience of friends can be viewed on YouTube and Reverbnation.

Josh Farmer Band is planning a tour in August 2013 that will take us to the Northwest coast area. Details will be announced on this page in late spring!

With a message of unity, equality and love for a creative community, their exciting, one-of-a-kind, live performances are known to incite vibes of happiness and freedom. Let go through joyful dance and sing along while Josh and his band do what they enjoy most!

Cure For The Common

"Cure for the Common lives up to its name. Armed with an arsenal of original funk rock tunes, the band is known for packing houses full of eager dancers ready to follow them into the morning. For those that have caught a show (or a dozen) in the past year, there is no question as to why the band has quickly become one of the most sought-after groups in Bozeman. The tunes are fun, the vibe is fresh and the band is overflowing with talented musicians."

"What more could you ask for?" asks Bozeman Daily Chronicle Arts Editor, Rachel Hergett.

The band's dedication to working hard and continuously writing high-caliber music has pushed them to the top of the stack amongst Montana's touring music scene. Their sound has evolved since the band's inception, now featuring a progressive funk sound that underpins their irresistible fusion of genres. Unstoppable rock'n'roll energy seamlessly integrates with a jazz musicality that makes their raucous dance party an equally engaging listening experience.

Now they're taking their explosive and innovative sound on the road to venues and festivals across the country, drawing diverse and energetic crowds at every turn. There's no telling where the band will wind up next, but you can be sure it will be on a big stage in a city or college town near you.

Muzikata

Montana's newest Reggae/Funk outfit based in Missoula, MT. Muzikata won the 2012 Zoo Music Award for the Funk/Soul/Reggae category.

In Walks Bud

In Walks Bud, first forming in 2007, met and began jamming in the small music scene of Helena ,MT. With the move to Bozeman in the summer of 2010, they released their 3rd album ‘Supertonic’ and continued playing more shows throughout Montana, Idaho, and Seattle. Having recently released their 4th album, 'Take Time' it is clear these guys have staying power that is proven by their moving, progressive and youthful energy. The sound captures the essence of youth, and can bring you to life through the amazing energy and feeling that that band shares with the audience. The music sustains high’s and low’s from both the lead/rhythm guitar played by Aaron Williams and the funky, grooving low bass played by Casey George. The melodic, fast passed uplifting keyboard tracks, produced by Clay Desimone, keep you feeling young, beautiful and wanting to dance your heart out. The rhapsodic beats of In Walks Bud are played by the soulful drummer Alex Schwab, guaranteed to be harmonious, lifting, and sweet sounding. But Don’t think this drummer only has a soft side, see the band live and you will experience the euphonious, funky and technical raw talent this drummer has. You'll be on your feet before you know it, as well as having each song contain a different story that comes from In Walks Bud’s lives and experiences as a band. Being young only happens once and the six years of hard work these four individuals have done leads you to believe they will be around for a long time.
