Delhi 2 Dublin
Vancouver-based Delhi 2 Dublin is a group of five musicians who mash up electronica and world music, keeping it heavy on the Bhangra, Celtic and Dub flavours. Fusing tabla, fiddle, dhol, Punjabi vocals, and electric sitar with scorching electronic beats, the crew takes listeners on a wild ride through global sounds and synchronicities.
Originally formed for a one-shot performance during Vancouver's Celtic Fest in March of 2006, word of their foot stomping, high energy live set started to spread, and the project took on a life of its own. Since then, D2D has been busy gigging constantly, touring Eastern Canada and California, playing some of Canada's largest festivals (including the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Shambhala, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues) as well as being invited to open the massive Canada Day celebrations for 40,000 people on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 2007. They've shared the bill with names like De La Soul, Cheb i Sabbah, and Metric, and have found a cult following in many of the West Coast's smaller communities and towns. Their debut album "Delhi 2 Dublin" reached #3 on the Canadian Chart Attack world music charts; their new Remix album reached #1 and receives consistent airplay from Japan to Eastern Europe to the UK.
D2D is now getting ready for a busy summer of touring; they'll be hitting festivals like Sunfest (London), Hillside (Guelph), the Regina Folk Festival, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the North County Fair (AB), Faerieworlds (Eugene), The Big time Out (Cumberland), Shambhala (Nelson) and some other big surprises that they can't share quite yet…
They are also currently recording their first music video with their friend and director Michael Mann.
NON STOP BHANGRA
Highlighting the ancestral roots of Punjabi dance while pushing boundaries with contemporary influences, Non Stop Bhangra is a genre-busting elixir of North Indian Bhangra music and dance, mixed with reggae, hip-hop, and electronica. An ever-evolving collective of dancers, DJs, drummers, vocalists, and musicians, Non Stop Bhangra is a non-stop party. Featuring dance lessons and performances with Dholrhythms Dance Company, and music by DJ Jimmy Love, the group has won legions of fans with its monthly events in San Francisco. Dholrhythms Dance Company also promotes the artistic and cultural heritage of India with classes and workshops, providing a unique platform for people of diverse backgrounds to come together and dance in a positive environment.
Non Stop Bhangra was founded in 2004 when Dholrhythms founders Vicki Virk and Suman Raj teamed up with DJ Jimmy Love with the goal of bringing Bhangra to a wider audience. The first Non Stop Bhangra was hosted to celebrate the one year anniversary of Dholrhythms by providing a dance space for students of Dholrhythms Bhangra classes. Since then, NSB has made this traditional style a serious dance floor craze in San Francisco, drawing the most diverse crowds to join in the frenzy. NSB is a destination, creating sold out nights and write-ups as one of the best dance floor nights in San Francisco.
After 7 years of full capacity shows, in 2012, the award winning production moved into one of the hottest venues in the city, Public Works. With this move comes later hours, more room to dance and late night food provided by some of the best food trucks in San Francisco. Becoming one of the ambassadors for the sound of Bhangra in the US, the vision for NSB is to expand on the experience and West Coast Bhangra to a whole new level!
In addition to the monthly event, the group has performed at some of the largest stages in the West Coast including San Francisco’s renowned Stern Grove Festival, TED XSF at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts, Goldman Environmental Prize Ceremony at War Memorial Opera House, Inauguration Ceremony of Mayor Ed Lee at SF City Hall, Michael Franti’s Power to the Peaceful in Golden Gate Park, New Mexico’s ¡Globalquerque!, Grand Performances in Los Angeles, Pasadena’s Levitt Pavilion, and Canada’s Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival and many more.
