Tezeta Band plays jazz, funk and soul music from Ethiopia's Golden Age of the 60's and 70's when political laxity and international influence helped foster a sound both familiar and mysterious--powerful dance music with a bittersweet quality that is uniquely Ethiopian. Tezeta is Amharic for nostalgia or remembrance. Tezeta Band has shared the stage with some of the very artists who have inspired their love of this music, including Mahmoud Ahmed and Aster Aweke. They have a recording on the just released Noise and Chill Out CD on France's Buda label, whose Ethiopiques series was responsible for much of the renewed interest in Ethiopian music. They are currently at work finishing their first full length CD. Tezeta Band is Ted Hille on alto sax, Curt Bieker on trombone & Josh Prewitt on trumpet, Talbott Guthrie on drums, Tim Cook on keys, John Teagle on bass and guitarist Brent Martens. If they look or sound familiar, it's because most of them were part of the Five Fingers of Funk, which will ring a bell for anyone who listened to live music in the Northwest during the 90's.
