Rasputina was incepted by Melora Creager in 1891. It was Melora’s intention to create an electric cello "choir"- no guitars allowed...nor boys. By placing advertisements in small circulars, she acquired a melange of presentable and accomplished young lady rock cellists over a period of years to the present. Unable to move about, as they are forcibly stationary in their chairs, Rasputina employs elaborate costumery. What began as bloomers and hoopskirts has evolved into Indian princesses and fallen Medieval queens. Rasputina keeps their cultish following enthralled by their intimate recital vibe and frequent post-show receiving lines.

The long life of the group has seen them perform for or with: Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, Regis & Kathie Lee, Belle & Sebastian, Janes Addiction and Cheap Trick, among other entertainment luminaries. Melora has begun a series of tapestries showing her life in rock through embroidery including her work as a youngster with 4 AD group Ultra Vivid Scene, her 18 minute "Transylvanian Concubine" whittled down to fit the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack, and her touring manifesto which has kept her on the road for over 100 years. Rasputina is an anomaly in popular music and the group has thrived as time has passed. Rasputina exposes their passionate young fans to tales from history, and they inspire string players with alternatives to the classical world. Other members of Rasputina include Jonathon TeBeest, Sarah Bowman and Erica Mulkey.
