Vir are a post-punk noise-pop trio based in the SF Bay Area, who love fuzz pedals, loops, and lots of delay. Comprised of Sam Sloane (Vox, Guitar) Natasha Arens (Bass) and Jeff Paul (Drums), Vir experiment with elements of post punk, psychedelic noise and shoegaze to conjure up a glacial, dark and dynamic sound. Based in Oakland, CA but with roots in Christchurch New Zealand, Vir has a binding affinity with many Kiwi post-punk trios such as the Gordons, Bailter Space and HDU.
"Finally, someone makes this shoegaze revival thing work. Oakland's Vir, formerly called Montana, lays U2-size vocals, melodies, and song structures over sinister, flatline backdrops à la Joy Division. The resulting tension, anchored by singer Sam Sloane's excellent guitar work, creates songs that don't stale." —East Bay Express
The Dandelion War
The Dandelion War is a 5-piece indie/post-rock band from Oakland.
"The Dandelion War successfully does the airy, Radiohead meets Sigur Ros thing, though not as long-winded. Like other bands in the genre, dynamics shift between multi-instruments, and strong beats provide a solid backdrop for the melodies. The vocals sometimes give way to the playing, which will keep the band from leaning into Coldplay territory. It sounds like they think that's a good thing." -Oakland Tribune
"Like Explosions (in the Sky), The Dandelion War use shimmering guitars, building drums and crescendos of noise to paint pictures." -Bandsofthebay.com
Andrew plays some drums. Greg plays guitar. Young tries to sing and play guitar at the same time but has trouble doing it well sometimes. Alex is good at the bass. Young and Andrew like music and burritos so they formed a band. Greg likes music too so he came along for the ride. We found Alex on craigslist. We thought he was going to be crazy but he turned out alright. Young saw a picture of a lion riding a horse and he chose that for our name. He writes the songs and then the rest of us make them better. We like what we do and we hope you enjoy our music or at least not want to throw things at us. If you do, please throw sandwiches. Thank you.
