The Rite of Spring - Through an Eclectic Spectrum by Gene Pritsker performed by Sound Liberation

The Rite of Spring was premiered on the 29th of May in 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, France. The ballet caused quite a stir with its sexual and unconventional movements as well as Stravinsky's unique and avant-garde music. It has been reported that the performance caused a riot, where people were literally out of their seats jumping and pounding one another. I always regarded this as the first mosh pit of the 20th century. As a teenager studying music, I was strongly influenced by 'The Rite of Spring'. I listened to it over and over until what sounded like noise at first revealed itself to be the most incredible piece of music I have ever heard. I have always wanted to reinterpret this music through my own experience. On April 28th at the Cutting Room, with my band Sound Liberation and 100 years after its premiere in Paris, I will present my 45 minute composition. This new look at 'The Rite' interprets the various elements of this music using my eclectic methods and ideas: writing hip-hop and jazz songs, using improvisational techniques (like the ones used in African and Indian music), incorporating DJ and electronic elements and employing the various genres and techniques that have been developed since the premiere of this masterpiece . Joining me in Sound Liberation will be: Chanda Rule - voice, LeeAnet Noble - percussion/rap/tap dance, Franz Hackl - trumpet, Greg Baker - guitar, Dan Cooper - 7-string bass guitar / flute, Gernot Bernroider - drums and myself on guitar/rap/Di.J.

Sound Liberation, an eclectic chamber ensemble/band, was formed in 1996. Sound Liberation's musical philosophy, developed by band founder Gene Pritsker, is based upon "ending the segregation of sound vibration (i.e. musical Genres)". The group incorporates its philosophy by performing compositions that encompass a diverse range of musical genre, heavily influenced by hip-hop and rock rhythms. This enables one to hear elements from classical music to Jazz to music of various cultures at a Sound Liberation show.

What the critics said about Sound Liberations 3 cd's:

"The freedom of sounds, as the name suggests, is truly implemented in a masterful way"
- Thorsten Bendnarz -Jazzethic Magazine

"..this is some startlingly original music. I am very encouraged when I hear music like this." "a most unusual combination of hip hop, bebop, rock shred, show tunes, punk, funk and classical, and original contemporary compositional elements"
- Gapplegate Guitar & Bass Blog

"4 stars" "unexpected twists and turns...The result my have you seeing visions...strains of jazz, contemporary classical mu sic, minimalism, and even hip-hop and and African rhythms "
- John Ephland, Downbeat, Nov. 2010

“Sound Liberation display a level of multi-instrumental virtuosity and imagination that makes middleweight prog acts seem positively pedestrian by comparison. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea for sure but for the open-minded muso, there’s weeks and weeks of musical nourishment to feast upon in these thirteen tracks.“ - Jodi Mullen, This is Not A Scene 2012

The group performed at the Outreach Festival '06 and again in '07 in Schwaz, Austria. Also in '07 Sound Liberation performed at the Estonian House and presented Gene Pritsker's Opera 'Money' at the Players Theatre and Flea Theatre in New York. In May of '08 'Money' was performed at the Etna music Festival in Catania, Sicily and Sound Liberation played in Ragusa, Sicily. In July '08 they performed at the Blaine jazz Festival in Blaine, Wa. In May of '09 Sound Liberation presented 2 nights at the Flea theater, performing Gene Pritsker's one hour VRE Suite written for the Sound Liberation Quintet and a concert with B3+ of music from their albums on Col-Legno records. In September 2011 they performed at the Bremen Musik Fest. in Germany. In past years the group was part of the Peekaboo Festival of New Music and Theater and has toured Newfoundland, Canada in April of '99.
