Not your average halftime show. As the first term of the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy festival comes to a close, some of their trusted team members bring the ruckus to the basement of one of the best Dim Sum restaurants in the Lower East Side. Acts on the bill include recently reunited dance music revolutionaries Metro Area; Night Slugs founders Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990; and house music’s best kept secret Gerd Janson who will make his long-awaited US debut on the night.
Metro Area (DJ Set)
After over a year of late-night sessions in New Jersey and Manhattan, Metro Area burst onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut 12" featuring the cult smash "Atmosphrique." The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area was born out of the duo's dichotomous love of both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno.
Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of early club classics, mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix: Detroit's icey futurism, Chicago's abstract track-modes and the warmth of New York and New Jersey's deep house.
DJ/Producer from South London
This English visionary has been called a “true phenomenon”...with releases on Mad Decent and Sound Pellegrino, L-Vis 1990 started receiving his well deserved recognition for changing the face of underground club music. His Incredibly unique style comes from his musical stew of post-modern tribal house and years of garage heritage...
One of our most treasured Academy team members, Gerd Janson is the quintessential DJ’s DJ, unearthing the gems that get other music lovers hot and excited. The man has his plate full. Whether at the helm of the long-running Liquid club night at Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson with DJ comrade Thomas Hammann, dishing out simmering analog House as co-owner of label Running Back, or penning many a story for Germany’s Spex and Groove magazines, not to mention his scholarship of American studies, he seems to run on more powerful batteries than the rest of us. Enjoy this adventure through magic dance music new & old, with special guest appearance by Kool DJ Pink Alert. It’s risky, but it’ll make you frisky.
DKDS are rising stars of the NYC underground, night creatures whose main goal in life is to make you stay up too late and dance ’til dawn. DKDS is made up of Scrap and Chris – two tall, dark cousins who hail from Seattle and New York, respectively. The two reunited in Brooklyn over a mutual love of jackin’ deep house and techno and formed a DJ duo; over the last couple years their back-to-back sets have made a serious mark on NYC nightlife, one debauched party at a time. The boys recently caught the attention of MeanRed, who made them residents of their Dark Disco party deep Downtown. They’re also hard at work on original tracks with the edgy-yet-suave vibe that is their signature. Don’t sleep… no, really.
