Mobb Deep "20th Anniversary Tour" w/ Lkeys, Anxious and Unspoken Words

Mobb Deep

This rap duo, comprising Havoc (b. 21 May 1974, Queensbridge, New York, USA) and Prodigy (b. Albert Johnson, 2 November 1974, Queensbridge, New York, USA), made a colossal impact in 1995 with their hardcore hip-hop single "Shook Ones Part II". Compared in the music press to the experience of hearing Schoolly D for the first time, it saw the New York-based rap team propelled to the top of the Billboard charts and national fame. It accompanied the release of their second album, The Infamous, which offered a succession of bleak inner-city narratives such as "Survival Of The Fittest" and the Q-Tip-produced "Drink Away The Pain". Mobb Deep had first received attention in 1991 when US rap magazine The Source praised them in its "Unsigned Hype" column. Both partners were just 16 years old, but their first demo possessed obvious maturity and skill, boosted by their experience of watching MC Shan and Roxanne Shant rapping in local parks. They met in 1988, Havoc having been tutored by his rapping cousin MC Tragedy. By 1992, they had secured a recording contract with Island Records' subsidiary 4th And Broadway, recruiting Large Professor and DJ Premier to help with the production of their somewhat listless debut album. Despite the initial momentum, however, the deal fell apart amid squabbles with an unethical manager. The duo regrouped in time for The Infamous, which was much-improved in terms of both production and lyrics. "Survival Of The Fittest" was promoted by a "paintball' competition in Long Island, with competing teams including members of the Wu-Tang Clan and Loud Records' staff. Ensuing releases have continued to earn the duo both critical praise and commercial reward, with 1999's Murda Muzik particularly successful. Prodigy, despite suffering from sickle cell anemia, found the time to work on his solo debut, November 2000"s H.N.I.C.
