Aaron & The Spell
This year, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Innervisions, Philadelphia-based music outfit Aaron & The Spell will cover the entire record from front to back in a live setting.
To make the performance even more special, the show, held during National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week (November 16-24), will be a benefit concert with ticket proceeds going to a non-profit organization called Pathways to Housing PA (www.pathwaystohousingpa.org), which offers hope and an array of innovative services to chronically homeless individuals battling severe mental illness in Philadelphia. Says Aaron Brown, “It is only fitting to tie Innervisions to giving back to the community, because if you really listen to the record, Stevie’s concern for people and the community are what make that record so meaningful for me and so many others.”
Sonja Sofya began singing as soon as she was old enough to speak, and memorized her parents' record collection at a young age, belting out Beatles and Elton John tunes with gusto. After being caught multiple times dancing around the house to recordings of Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Chopin, she began studying classical piano and never looked back. Drawing comparisons to Laura Nyro and Regina Spektor as well as Fiona Apple, Sonja Sofya's performances are both intimate and powerful, combining melodic and harmonic sensibilities scavenged from classic pop and concert music with lyrics reminiscent of folk and rock.
