NOBLE SOCIETY (NYC)
[Subatomic Sound, X-Ray Productions]
Crowned kings of urban reggae NOBLE SOCIETY, bring their mash-up of reggae/hip hop. “Noble Society harkens back to a time when the term ‘hip hop meets dancehall meant more than slapping Sean Paul on a remix.” ––The Village Voice. With their genre-bending electronic-tinged single “Mama so Divine” remix currently rocking international airwaves, Noble Society is a group ready to brand themselves as the evolution of urban world and dancehall. Noble’s futuristic reggae sound, with a world-view, incorporates both their quintessential roots and their need to represent Brooklyn’s vibrant cultural milieu. Comprised of musicians who have worked with a “who’s who” of music (Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Branford Marsalis), NS was born out of a desire to blend the sounds of hip hop and world music – call it urban reggae. Taking note from the grime scene currently brewing in London, the Noble Society sound is grounded in cultural music and constantly creating and reaching to the future, says founder, and guitar virtuoso, Diego “Fuego” Campo. “To catch a Noble Society show is to be transported to a place teeming with pure adrenaline.” TRACE Magazine
Noble members Fuego, Delie and Jahdan craft a sound that is both hip hop and reggae, both conscious and beat-driven. With the release of their new full length album, PPM, Noble is one of the most promising musical forces on the rise. Their sweet melodies and precise beats take listeners on a journey to a place where great music and greater understanding exist.
Influenced by UK grime, hip hop or “futuristic reggae,” as they like to describe it. Founder and producer Fuego Campo is a master at the Spanish guitar. He has produced work for reggae artists, including Midnite,Wayne Wonder, Lutan Fyah, Norrisman, Abijah and worked with hip hop artists, including David Banner. Jahdan has performed with the likes Matisyahu, Smif & Wesson, & Dead Prez, to name a few.
SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM
Subatomic Sound System's latest release is a genre bending, political scorcher featuring Anthony B entitled "Dem Can't Stop We From Talk" recorded in Africa, NYC, and Jamaica with remixes from producers around the world. Founded at the turn of the millennium, New York City based Subatomic Sound System has built a reputation worldwide for forward thinking production, explosive shows, and breaking down barriers with conscious topics and their forward thinking adaptation of 1970's Jamaican sound system culture and dub reggae studio techniques to a wide variety of current bass music genres, technology, and live performances. Subatomic Sound System releases have been seen topping various vinyl and digital charts in the past years spanning from dub to dubstep and everything bass heavy in between. A few of Subatomic Sound System's notable releases include their wild collaboration with Dubblestandart to produce Grammy winning dub reggae innovator Lee Scratch Perry's first dubstep tracks, eclectic collaborations with icons like filmmaker David Lynch, Prince Far-i, & UK punk pioneer Ari Up of the Slits, as well as unusual electronic projects with new school reggae torchbearers like Anthony B, Elephant Man, Jahdan Blakkamoore, and Dubblestandart. A record label, DJs, production crew, live band, and event promoters, the Subatomic Sound crew is at work in NYC on every level. Subatomic Sound System and the Subatomic Sound label are spearheaded by Emch, as producer, selector, musician, and also the host of Subatomic Sound Radio which blasted out over the years to a footprint of 11 million terrestrial listeners in the greater NYC area via KEXP's MoGlo broadcast on Radio New York, 91.5fm, and on the internet via Brooklyn Radio. Subatomic Sound System has toured throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Russia. In 2008, Emch was recruited by top ranking live dub band, Dubblestandart, to play guitar and melodica on tour worldwide with Grammy winning legend Lee Scratch Perry, reaching from capacity crowd shows at New York's Central Park to Europe's largest reggae festival, One Love in Poland.
Armed with a newfound sense of liberation, over two decades’ worth of production know-how and tools, and inspiration from dance music’s bevy of new champions, MING is looking toward the musical future he always dreamed of. “It’s exciting to hear this new sonic thing that’s happening, similar to what we had when we were mixing genres in the old days. But now it’s crossing over not just to dance kids, but to metal heads and rock people,” he says. “It’s exciting to see 18-years-olds stagediving at dance shows. I’m inspired by the people who have done something with this genre that was considered dead. We’ve gone past the ‘everybody’s a DJ’ phase: Now people are good producers and good DJs.” But the sweetest part of all for this musician-by-blood is just being back in the mix. “I’ve got something to say – again,” says MING. “I felt like it had been said and done. Now I have my voice back.”
New York City's own bass-slinger, Joe Constantino, better known as Jumpshot, is a force to be reckoned with on the EDM / dance circuit. Stylizing his dark sound with signature hip-hop samples and classic breaks, each record pushes its genre to a new level as Jumpshot continues to make waves throughout the industry. Working vigorously for several years, Jumpshot eventually broke into the realm of professional music in 2001 and soon found himself in the studio alongside major leaguers such as Rev Run (Run DMC), Busta Rhymes, Joe Budden, Lil' Mo, Fabolous, Paul Caine, Fat Man Scoop, Prodigy, Christina Milian, and others. After taking a few years off from making "anything musical", Jumpshot came back with a vengeance in 2010, this time storming the dance music scene. A long-time fan of jungle and drum & bass, he was introduced to dubstep by a friend and became very interested, very quickly. He released "The Raw Uncut" on Synth City Records in 2011 – a two-track release like no other at the time that quickly found itself at the top of the charts. He followed up with a huge release on Play Me Records later that year and several releases since then, and continues to pave the way with his unique style & sound.
Jumpshot is currently running alongside MING at Hood Famous Music in NYC. With several projects working in addition to his solo career, there is a lot to come from Jumpshot and the Hood Famous crew, including a genre-defining, downtempo venture entitled "Abstract The Ism", where Jumpshot & MING bring their most refined assets to light.
