CARNAVAL with Z'Bumba, maracaBOOM, and Samba Já
maracaBOOM!, Samba Já

Like the love child of zydeco and salsa, this irrepressibly danceable music is a fresh, tropical aural fruit salad, a gorgeous mixture of impossibly delicious sounds like juicy mango accordions, peppery percussion, and the passion-fruit portuguese poetry as sung by scintillating São Paulo songstress Gabriella. It's hard to believe it was once the theme music of the Cangaçeiros, the infamous desert 'pirates' of Brazil's hinterlands.
Forró dancing starts simple, like a two step, but as the music quiets the brain and moves bodies, we're reminded that Brazil wasn't founded by Puritans.
maracaBOOM! was founded to help introduce the profound beauty, energy, and diversity of Northeastern Brazilian popular and folkloric music, culture, and tradition to North America. Primarily a percussion ensemble, maracaBOOM! encourages the involvement of community members as collaborators, co-conspirators, and performers.
maracaBOOM! is a music group in Portland, Oregon, whose goal is to bring the sincerity, creativity, joy, and staggering cultural richness of Northeastern Brazil to the Northwest through its incredible music and dance.
Samba Ja is Eugene's own bateria -- a thirty-member mobile percussion ensemble specializing in Afro-Brazilian beats.
