Susan Coss of Mezcalistas Mezcal Dinner

Susan Coss of Mezcalistas Mezcal Dinner

On Tuesday, July 16th, Comal will welcome Susan Coss, co-founder of Mezcalistas, for a special dinner that will be both festive and educational. Susan will discuss the impact the mezcal industry is having on the communities where it is made. The ramp-up in production and the surge in demand is changing not only the process of how mezcal is made, but also changing life in the small towns that have been marginalized for centuries. The changes are both positive and negative and, as appreciation (and consumption) of mezcal increases on this side of the border, Susan has taken the lead on educating consumers about these issues.

Susan has spent time in Oaxaca annually since 2003 and over the years has developed relationships with mezcaleros in small villages. Drawing from these relationships, she has chosen a select group of mezcals to pour at the dinner. She will share compelling and personal stories about each of the mezcals, having visited the villages where they are produced and met the mezcaleros who are often carrying on long standing family traditions.

Susan Coss is the co-founder of Mezcalistas, a media, events and consulting company dedicated to spreading the gospel of mezcal, and the Mezcal Collaborative, a member based organization committed to growing the mezcal category responsibly, building a common mezcal education platform, and creating the high impact marketing campaigns that mezcal deserves. She is also the co-founder of Mexico in a Bottle, which now takes place annually in cities across the United States.
