Papa Mali and Bobby Vega Acoustic Duo

Papa Mali and Bobby Vega Acoustic Duo

With over four decades of touring and recording experience - and a combined resume that reads like a who's who of American roots, rock, folk, psychedelic, blues, funk, jazz, gospel and world music* - acclaimed New Orleans guitarist and producer, Papa Mali and Bay Area bassist extaordinaire, Bobby Vega have teamed up, to explore the minimalist possibilities of acoustic string music, in a duo format. Inspired by the duos of the late Jerry Garcia and John Kahn, as well as current and longtime carriers-of-the-flame, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna), the Papa Mali and Bobby Vega Acoustic Duo is now available, for select tour dates, festivals and special events.

"Papa Mali and Bobby Vega have performed and recorded, onstage and in the studio, individually and collectively, with the following artists: Willie Nelson, Sly Stone, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Santana, Tower of Power, Taj Mahal, Derek Trucks, Galactic, John Medeski, Maceo Parker, Dr. John, Billy Preston, Etta James, Cyril Neville, Bernie Worrell, David Amram, Joan Baez, Paul Butterfield, Lee Oscar, Maria Muldaur, Eddie Bo, Bobby Keys, The New Mastersounds, Hubert Laws, Babatunde Olatunji, Govt Mule, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Jefferson Starship, Peter Rowan, North Mississippi Allstars, Henry Butler, Col. "Bobby Vega is a one-of-a-kind bass maestro, who sounds like no one else on earth." - Bass Player Magazine

"The Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia was like the Miles Davis Band without Miles. So, finally, after Jerry left us, I got to meet Papa Mali. And finally I met a guy that I could totally believe in as a musician. As Jerry did, [Mali] has total knowledge of all kinds of music. He's the one person I've heard sing Jerry songs that I really like his voice doing it." - Bill Kreutzmann (excerpt from 2012 Rolling Stone interview)

Sasha Dobson grew up in Santa Cruz, CA. Her father Smith Dobson was one of the Bay Area’s most influential and in-demand jazz pianists, her mom a well-known singer and her brother an accomplished drummer.
By the time she was 12, Sasha was performing with the entire family at the Monterey Jazz Festival. She moved to NY at 17 and quickly assimilated into the NYC jazz scene, releasing 2005’s The Darkling Thrush, recorded with The Chris Byars Octet, and Modern Romance (2006). The latter, which won praise from TIME Magazine, was produced by Jesse Harris and engineered/mixed by the world renowned, Terry Manning.
Hailed by MAGNET as “raw and compelling”, Dobson’s album, Aquarius (2013), was recorded with guitarist/producer Joel Hamilton (Black Keys, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse), Kenny Wollesen on drums and Tony Scherr on bass. She and her band performed at Farm Aid 2013 and Dobson opened for Willie Nelson on a series of early 2014 dates. Later that year she released Into the Trees (2014), featuring both original songs and covers.
After playing and touring around the world together in Norah Jones’ band, the two women decided to start another band together. With the addition of Catherine Popper on bass, Puss n Boots formed and they took their talents into the studio. Their debut album No Fools, No Fun was released on Blue Note in July 2014.
Over the past years, Sasha has done three guest appearances with Neil Young and Bob Dylan and Dolly Parton at MusiCares. Leading her own band, she has also done a series of opening dates for Neil Young and Willie Nelson’s Farm Aid performances.
Throughout her career, Sasha has continually maintained her notoriety as a remarkable jazz vocalist. With performances in Lebanon, Russia, Japan, China, Switzerland and Greece – Sasha’s voice has been heard and enjoyed world wide.
2019 now finds Sasha on the verge of releasing a series of singles under her own name as well as Puss n Boots album #2! Recorded at Wilco’s studio “the loft” in Chicago engineered by the great Tom Schick. Sasha is looking forward to a full year ahead!
