Beginning as an instrumental post-rock band from Virginia, Comrades has consistently created music that is aggressive, ambient, complex, and emotional. Drawing from their diverse musical backgrounds, band members Laura McElroy (bass/vocals) and Joseph McElroy (guitar) create music that they feel passionately about, and draft a space for the listener to take part in.
Invalids started as the bedroom project of Pete Davis (with remote internet-based collaboration with other musicians). As of March 2015, it has grown to a proper four-piece band with the addition of Joe Scala, Raymond Bonanno, and Brock Benzel. “Heck-of-a gnarly math rock” from Princeton, New Jersey.
Nathaniel Rappole’s solo project Gull is best described as a drum; a living, breathing, squawking drum that cries out assorted music of creatures past and delivers it from a single unique perspective; a communal music broadcast of blood and bile left as an offering on the altar of sound.
Heavy instrumental post rock from Richmond, VA. Shy, Low (Spartan Records) has made a name for themselves through impacful live performances (including an impressive light show), dynamic song writing, & nonstop touring.
Colin Phils (formed in Asia) is a now Richmond based band that offers complex instrumental music along with vocals filled with harmonies. The band combines the sounds of both math rock and post-rock whiling keeping a pop sensibility with catchy hooks and harmonies throughout.
Dumb Waiter is an American avant-garde jazz rock band from Richmond, VA. A wonderful concoction of heavily effected saxophone (like you’ve never heard), guitar, bass, and drums.
evolv's musical style is driven by powerful harmonies and complimented melodic movements. Armed with a passionate stage presence evolv captivates the audience while continuing to push the boundaries of cinematic post-rock and ambient/electronic compositions.
In short, the members of Spooky Cool are merely seeking to produce music which they themselves consider entertaining and thought-provoking, and to establish a singular voice, a niche, in the already chockablock world of pop music.
A math rock band from Charlotte, North Carolina formed in 2016. Intricate with saxophone melodies of odd time signatures and twinkling guitars, Cuzco (Refresh records) titles themselves as “Mathstrumental”.
Post Sixty Five
Ambient, alternative rock band based in Central Virginia with sounds similar to The National, Death Cab for Cutie, and Explosions In The Sky.
Aggressive Indie Rock / Richmond, VA. A combination of noises in hopes to connect to a beautiful humanity that doesn't always know how beautiful it is.
Way, Shape, or Form
One could describe the music of Way, Shape, or Form as digital glitter looped with syncopated, intricate guitar parts inspired by the yesteryears of video game soundtracks and math rock. The project based out of Richmond, Virginia has been the ambitious, electronic dream of musician Troy Gatrell for close to ten years.
Cardinal is a five-piece rock band from Richmond, VA that grew out of a mutual love for the dark, often brutal imagery of emo and the heaviness of post-hardcore.
You can find Dave Watkins on many different stages and spaces utilizing any number of sounds coming out of his hand-made electric dulcitar along with assorted effects and looping mechanisms. Often Dave will accompany his music with glitched out sounds and reactive video projections.
Female fronted indie rock band that offers melancholic catchy melodies with upbeat intricate music.
