Jah People with special guest Ron Holloway

There are cover bands…and then there are musical convergences that manage to transcend the local club scene to create a movement with a crafty niche for innovating in an often-overlooked lane.

At first glance, Philadelphia’s JAH PEOPLE is the perfect embodiment of Bob Marley’s melodic messages of love, spirituality, and good vibes. But peel back the layers of the collective’s fun, party-infused exterior, and you’ll find a group of gifted singers and musicians who possess years of hard-earned experience. In fact, JAH PEOPLE is plotting to capitalize off newly crafted, original music, barely able to contain their growing desire for a name beyond the tough-as-nails City of Brotherly Love.
Founded in 2012 by member Dean Rubenstein, JAH PEOPLE moves crowds with their spirited sets that always include improvisational interpretations of their primary inspiration, the world-renowned Marley. Live performances are also peppered with reggae classics, as well as standards from the worlds of funk, rock, and soul, "reggae-fied" in a way that only JAH PEOPLE can pull off!

As an entity, JAH PEOPLE looks like what one might achieve when crossing the diversity of a United Colors of Benetton ad with the dankest, cheeba-filled juke joint of Kingston, Jamaica. They are individual personalities and talents within their own right – Dean Rubenstein, Alesia Dessau, Noah Sokoloff, Andrew Walls, Mike Stankus, and Anthony Gentile – tightly wrapped by their love of music like a well-rolled spliff.
In 2015, JAH PEOPLE released RISING HIGH. the band’s first original album including an update of Marley’s “Exodus”, and guest appearances from Philly rap legend FREEWAY and reggae staple RAS PROFESSOR. The positive fan response has led to coveted stages such as The Ardmore and The Fillmore, and an annual spot at the official Philadelphia Caribbean Festival. Summer 2016 also found them serving as PHL LIVE alum ambassadors, playing the beach, and headlining “Culture in the Courtyard, a City-sponsored beer garden fest.

JAH PEOPLE’S live show is an applauded experience; among their accolades, they earned the prestigious 2015 PHLLive Music Competition’s top prize the “World Music” category, presented by City Councilman David Oh. Look for JAH PEOPLE’S infectious performances from the RISING HIGH LP during their live “Pop-Ups For Peace” tour across four Mid-Atlantic states, along with a new, live performance album in Fall 2016.
