Toots and the Maytals
Toots is one of the true architects of reggae –so much so that “Do the Reggay,” a 1968 single by Toots and his group, theMaytals, is credited with giving the genre its name. Classic songs written and recorded by Toots and the Maytals have been covered by the likes of the Clash and the Specials, and the group was featured in reggae’s greatest breakthrough event –“The Harder They Come,” the 1972 film that became an international sensation. The all-star guests on TRUE LOVE range from legends like Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Bonnie Raitt to younger stars including No Doubt, the Roots, and Phish’s Trey Anastasio. The caliber of these collaborators reveals the impact that Toots has had on several generations of rockers and rappers, while appearances from reggae icons Bunny Wailer and Marcia Griffiths show the respect granted to the man who might be the music’s greatest living vocalist. At the heart of it all is that voice –drenched in soul, rooted in gospel, and still breathtakingly powerful after almost four decades in the spotlight.
Van Gordon Martin Band
At the young age of seven, Van Gordon Martin started his musical journey.
Growing up in Chicago, his first job was polishing and stringing guitars in local music shop the Musicians Network. Van was discovered early on, and mentored by legendary Parliament Funkadelic and Talking Heads keyboardist, Bernie Worrell. This set the tone for his new musical existence.
Van Gordon Martin has been a veteran of the east coast music scene for over a decade, and is a part of Boston based Reggae collective Dub Apocalypse, Moroccan/Jazz/ Electronic group Club D’elf, Hip Hop Legend Big Daddy Kane’s Live band, Paul Wolstencroft of Slightly Stoopid’s Organically Good Trio, The Naya Rockers, and many others. He is also founding member of Spiritual Rez, a project witch he toured with extensively up until 2011.
“My goal is to share my story and love for guitar with the world. It has been always been the thing that makes me feel connected to the Spirit Realm. Rasta, Reggae, Soul, Jazz, Blues, Roots Music. It speaks the truth. Every artist is part of the building blocks of our social creative consciousness. I feel honored and blessed to share my ideas with anyone that will hear me. With every note we play with honest intention, we tear down a part of the injustices in the world. Love and music are indeed one. Music, it is our highest meditation”
DJ Selectress Iriela starting at 6:30pm + spinning between sets!
Multimedia producer, humanitarian, and music evangelist Selectress Iriela, began her journey into the entertainment business in the nineties on Reggae radio, on 88.9FM WERS Boston.
While living in Kingston and inspired by her work in international development, Iriela founded the multimedia production company, and tech platform, Second World. On a mission to diminish the gap between nations of abundance and ones of scarcity, Second World combines the trifecta of multimedia production, musical event curation, such as Culture Fest International, as well as advocating for the empowerment of fairly traded art & fashion, while creating uplifting entertainment.
Regularly assembling all-star teams throughout her musical curation career, Iriela has worked on key projects alongside artists such as Lady Starlight, Arsenio Hall, DJ Scratch, Amp Fiddler, Chaka Khan, Little Louie Vega, DJ Spinna, Sly and Robbie, The Wailers, Burning Spear, Yellowman, DJ Kool Herc, Tony Touch, Easy Mo Bee and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, to name a few.
