Founded in New Jersey in 1980, The Smithereens have been creating electrifying, original rock’n’roll for nearly 39 years. Jim Babjak (guitar), Mike Mesaros (bass) and Dennis Diken (drums) grew up together in Carteret and lead singer/chief songwriter, the late Pat DiNizio, hailed from Scotch Plains. The band paid its dues in NJ clubs like the Court Tavern in New Brunswick and the Stone Pony in Asbury Park and headlined NJ stages from the Meadowlands Arena to the State Theatre. They've toured with The Pretenders, Lou Reed, Ramones, and Tom Petty, and following their television debut on The Uncle Floyd Show, they were in heavy rotation on MTV and made appearances on The Tonight Show, Conan O'Brien, and Saturday Night Live.
Their take no prisoners sound, reflecting their blue collar Garden State roots, has resonated with fans worldwide over the course of 17 albums and 2500+ live shows. They've also inspired generations of musicians. Kurt Cobain counted The Smithereens as a major influence on Nirvana.
And with the 2017 passing of DiNizio, the surviving members have decided to continue to share their musical legacy and spread their NJ pride to fans all over the U.S. and the world!
