Robert Leslie

Robert Leslie

Robert Leslie is an indie-folk songwriter who captivates with soaring vocal melodies and deep lyrics on love, distance, and life on the road. He has travelled across three continents supporting himself with street music and has been making a vivid impression in New York ever since his arrival in 2013.
Robert was born in Manhattan in 1991 to mixed Dutch-English parents, and moved to Europe before his first birthday. He discovered music at an early age and was already singing on the streets of Amsterdam at eight years old. After graduating high school at seventeen he spent three months travelling through Europe, paying his way with street performances. He went to college in Utrecht for a year before dropping out in late 2011 to travel and pursue his music.

After spending a few months busking around Western Europe, Robert spent six weeks in a hotel room in the south of Morocco writing the first draft of his travel memoir, Street Snakes. Another six months of wandering followed, during which time Robert continued to make a living with street performances throughout Europe and start work on writing songs for his next EP, Sense of Distance (2012). After recording the EP in Amsterdam Robert drifted around the Canary Islands and Morocco a while longer before ending up in Madrid, where he recorded two music videos (“October Song” and “Another Day”) with a small Spanish recording studio, MapaMusica. The music videos each aired twice weekly on Spanish TV between April and November 2013.

A month or two later, in February 2013, Robert booked a flight to New York in hopes of taking his music career to a new level. He has been living in Brooklyn ever since, making a living playing in the subway, playing shows around the Lower East Side and Williamsburg, and occasionally composing songs for film soundtracks and commercials. Since arriving in New York he has been featured in the New York Daily News, Timeout! Magazine, Examiner.com, and on The Queen Latifah Show. He put out his latest album, A Shard of the Mosaic, in the fall of 2014 and promoted it with a two-month, eight-country tour of Europe. Robert returned to New York in January 2015 and has been working on new material and a new direction.
