Bobby Lane

Bobby Lane

Bobby Lane is an ambitious and versatile jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator living in Brooklyn, NYC. Originally from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Bobby grew up in a family that loved music, but he did not become serious about pursuing it as a career until he met his first jazz teacher, Chicago trumpet icon Marquis Hill. While in high school, Bobby won the solo trumpet chair in the 2012 IMEA Honors Jazz Band under the direction of Wycliffe Gordon, and would go on to win Downbeat Student Music Awards in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, Bobby attended the School for Improvisational Music in New York City, where he played with musicians from all over the world and studied with Ralph Alessi, Andy Milne, and Peter Epstein.

In the spring of 2016, Bobby graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He studied with Professors Tito Carrillo and Ronald Romm and performed with the Concert Jazz Band. As a member of the Concert Jazz Band, Bobby shared the stage with jazz greats including Adam Nussbaum, Ken Peplowski, David Bixler and Brad Leali.

Bobby relocated to Boston the following fall to attend the New England Conservatory, where he graduated with a Masters degree in Jazz Studies in 2018. He studied with John McNeil, Miguel Zenon, Steve Emery, and Jason Moran. At NEC, he played lead trumpet with the NEC Jazz Orchestra and was a co-leader of the 2017-2018 Honors Jazz Ensemble, Stop Requested.

In addition to his work as a performer, Bobby is deeply committed to his work in education. From 2016-2018, Bobby was the recipient of a teaching fellowship from the New England Conservatory, through which he taught private lessons and coached brass sectionals at elementary schools in Brighton and Roxbury, MA.

Currently, Bobby performs as a freelance trumpeter in a variety of styles, from brass quintets to alternative bands to funk/fusion ensembles in New York City and throughout the northeast. He is active as a bandleader, composer, and clinician with his jazz quintet, Sketchbook.
