VIVE LE REMIX! featuring HAT with Hello Psychaleppo

Join The Cedar and Alliance Française for VIVE LE REMIX!, a dance party featuring Moroccan-American mutlimedia artist, musician, and video DJ, HAT (Hatim Belyamani) with special guest, presented as part of Alliance Française’s Mois de la Francophonie series.

Each March, more than 33 million people around the world celebrate Le Mois de la Francophonie, a global initiative led by the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie to highlight the diversity of French-speaking cultures. Alliance Française, the Twin Cities’ only French cultural center, will host events across the Twin Cities highlighting local and international Moroccan community throughout the month of March. Visit their website at afmsp.org for more info!

Growing up in Morocco, Hatim (aka HAT) was an award-winning classical pianist, a guitarist, and surrounded by sounds of the country’s Arabic, Amazigh, and Sub-Saharan African origins. At Harvard, he studied sociology and music, and embraced electronic music as the key to unifying his eclectic influences.

In 2012, Hatim founded remix ←→ culture, an international collective celebrating musical traditions in harmony with digital remix art. They identify a country’s various musical traditions, then record, film, produce, release, and remix them. Work began in Hatim’s native Morocco and later expanded to other countries.

Since 2015, HAT has performed live remixes of the videos shot by the collective at various festivals and venues throughout the world (including Roskilde Festival and Lincoln Center). Hatim is now shifting his attention to the diverse and rich musical heritage of various immigrant communities in NYC, with whom several collaborations are in the works.

"I am delighted to see the work [HAT is] doing, I feel that Moroccan traditional music is a vast treasure that needs to be valued, and bringing it into the digital world as [HAT is] doing is a vital and powerful project." Justin Adams - Guitarist (Robert Plant & the Sensational Shapeshifters)

Hello Psychaleppo

Hailing from one of the most mystical and musically rich cities in the Levant, Hello Psychaleppo is deeply rooted in Arabic music tradition, captivating listeners with melodic strains of Tarab threaded seamlessly together with the convoluted sounds of electronic music. Hello Psychaleppoʼs compelling visual presentation is integral to the live experience that engages the soul and moves the body. Hello Psychaleppo is the brain child of Aleppian music producer and visual artist Samer Saem Eldahr.

Hello Psychaleppoʼs first album Gool Lʼah released in 2013 pioneered the music genre of Electro-Tarab . The album was the first of its kind, combining Arabic music theory and rhythms with electronic music tools and sounds creating a harmonious blend that is Electro-Tarab. VICE Magazine described the music as, “A pastiche of twitchy electronic sounds and golden age Arab pop music of the 1950s and 60s. It is alternately danceable and cathartic, melancholic and apocalyptic. Itʼs Massive Attack meets Abdel Halim Hafez.”

Hello Psychaleppo has released three full albums, Gool Lʼah (2013), HA! (2014) and Toyour (2017) creating a journey for listeners into the world of Arabic melodies, elaborate arrangements, and cathartic dance music.
